Question For Today: Have You Ever Tried A Beyond Meat Burger?

A recent addition to many fast food places, eateries, and grocery stores has been plant-based products manufactured to taste like meat. It seems to be very popular among vegans who have given up meat based products for a healthier lifestyle and diet. The combination of ingredients and how they are processed results in a genuine meaty texture, appearance, and flavor. It is sold as patties, sausages and regular meat. Besides Beyond Meat another competitor is Impossible Meats, best known for its Impossible Burger which is sold at Burger King. People who have tasted these plant-based foods claim they taste just like regular meat? I've never tried one myself, but am curious if they taste just as good as regular meat. So I wanted to see if anyone out there has given Beyond Meat or similar products a try, and if they actually enjoyed the taste? What's your opinion of these products? Have you or would you try one? Do You think you'd Like It? Will this be a passing fad or will it really catch on big with the public? Any reason why one should not make them a part of their diet? I tried one. I had it just like any other hamburger I'd eat here. I didn't care for it. It didn't have the same taste as a regular burger, even grilled. I will skip all plant based "meat" products from here on out. I like meat. It can't be replaced with plant based products. No matter how hard the anti-meat crowds try.

I'm with you because for someone who don't want to eat meat, why does all the bother of making the food taste like meat after all? I liked meat too, and no offence.

@asianlady You're right. It's a fake meat taste but why do that if the target is vegans? Won't they be upset with plant burgers that resemble the taste of meat?

@Vikingswest1 I don't understand the mind of who invented this kind of food. Why not stick to what the original plant taste like?

That's true. Haven't been on the market long enough. Some reports say they are not really that healthy because the product has too much salt and still contains fat. In addition, being processed many brands use refined oils, saturated fats, “natural” flavors, sugar, and other less healthy additives.

@m_audrey6788 As far as the plant based burgers go, I like Beyond and Impossible. I believe Impossible has soy where Beyond does not. I think that's how it goes. If I'm watching our soy intake, I go with Beyond as my first choice.

I have not tried. I have read serious report from scientists who have examined the product and their opinion about how healthy it is was "not sure, because the process to go from vegetable to final result is not clear". I will stay away.

@dgobucks226 Correct, the process to make them look and taste "like" (?!) meat is unhealthy, they use saturated fats, sugar and other ingredients that are far to be healthy. It's hype just because they want that we stop eating meat, cows seem to be a major problem because they produce greenhouse gas... I think that it's not true. They wanted to shift people drinking "almond milk" and now they are discovering how bad this idea has been. Almonds trees consume too much water and almond crops are treated with an excess of pesticides that is killing bees. Humans never miss to be stupid.

@LadyDuck I don't drink Almond Milk but I know people who do. Never knew that it was so bad. Humans seem to have a habit of hyping food products don't they? Common sense is not so common!

I tend to go along with your point of view Anna. Some reports say they are not really that healthy because the product has too much salt and still contains fat. In addition, being processed many brands use refined oils, saturated fats, “natural” flavors, sugar, and other less healthy additives. Maybe more hype than healthy?

I've had the Impossible Burger from Burger King and loved it. I found no difference in the taste. I think the only drawback to them would be the sodium content. If you need to limit sodium, this isn't a good fit. Otherwise, go for it.

@just4him I see. If it's priced liked the supermarket it definitely is more. Although I've read these companies are trying to figure out a way to lower cost.

Wise words and that's what I've heard too about the sodium content. Interesting that they could make a chemically processed food with the same texture and taste as meat I've heard they are really expensive and I did notice a significant price difference with the Beyond Meat packages in the stores. How much more are they than a regular Burger King burger?

Yes, just to see what the hype is all about for sure! One drawback I've noticed of these plant-based products is the cost. If the price comes down I would be more inclined to buy it.

I am a long-term vegetarian and have eaten both of them. I tend to like Impossible better than beyond--I don't really think they taste like meat, but they are pretty close. I am not a big fan of meat substitutes but do eat these occasionally--mainly for variety--

@dgobucks226 I don't think you need to eat lots of it--I tend to eat tofu, and eggs more than I do meat substitutes--but everyone in a while, I really do enjoy it

Thanks for your feedback. I have heard others who prefer the Impossible burger over Beyond Meat too. I'd go along with your point about tasting like meat. It seems a way to change the way people eat substituting this product in place of red meat. Some reports say they are not really that healthy because the product has too much salt and still contains fat. In addition, being processed many brands use refined oils, saturated fats, “natural” flavors, sugar, and other less healthy additives.

Plant based meat alternitives were around back in the early 2000s' as far as I can remember. When I was going to the Conklin center back in 2003, one of my "instructors" had me buying pre-made veggie patties instead of raw meat. Honestly, I really didn't notice the difference though give me a package of ground chuck anyway.

Well, one thing about veggie burgers they use real vegetables in their patties. No trying to trick anyone into believing their "meat." They say an advantage of these Beyond Meat plant products are they are lower in saturated fat and use plant based proteins like peas, beans, lentils, and soy. A drawback is the cost and high sodium content. Thanks for your response...

How do you like the sausage? Does it cost as much as the hamburger packs? One drawback I've noticed of these plant-based products is the cost. One has to weigh the benefits (lower saturated fat) vs cost I guess.

@dgobucks226 I enjoy meat in moderation and am happy to eat beans, lentils and soy without making them into burgers. Or I make them into tasty patties, but do not bother trying to make them taste like meat.

I think the idea is to steer people away from eating red meat which is high is saturated fat and raises cholesterol. An advantage of these plant based products are they are lower in saturated fat and use plant based proteins like peas, beans, lentils, and soy. But if you enjoy meat just having it in moderation would keep cholesterol under control I think.

My husband and I have been using Beyond Meat for quite a while. We both like the burgers, the beyond beef plant based ground, meatballs and breakfast sausage patties. They don't totally replace our meat consumption. We really don't use much meat anyway. Personally we like the taste and texture of the Beyond line.

These burgers are made with vegetable products but taste exactly like meat (supposedly). Which makes them different from the traditional veggie burger. Veggie burgers have real vegetables in them seem healthier to me.
