More and more events are being cancelled here

Western Australia has led a charmed life since the beginning of the pandemic. We’ve had some restrictions but very few lockdowns. But now, Omicron on the rise and we’re about to open our borders which will mean more cases. After being covid-free for so long, residents are naturally concerned and some groups are doing what they can to limit their chances of becoming sick. My husband and I take photos at endurance rides and the first one was scheduled for late March. The Progress Association of the tiny town would normally cater for the riders and raise money for themselves. But, because of the risk of covid and the uncertainty of what new rules might be imposed, they have asked that the ride be cancelled. And now the Fairbridge Folk Festival has been cancelled for the second year in a row, again because of uncertainty about covid. The organisers must feel gutted as they would have put so much work into organising a rich and varied programme. Unfortunately, I can’t help but think that we’ll only see more and more cancellations of more and more events as the numbers rise. And rise they will. Photo from a previous Fairbridge Folk Festival.

Its hard, you are lucky to have been spared thus far. These past 2 years will have long lasting effects on many of us. Now there is a new variant they have discovered. Where does it end?

We have been very, very lucky. The whole scenario is just so uncertain.

@JudyEv It is so very uncertain. It has altered most of our lives in many ways, everything from our investments to hospitalizations to purchasing anything large or small right into the churches and how we worship in gatherings.

Omicron variant has been with us since January when we felt the surge rising. Many events were suspended like the Face-to-Face classes and many other things too. But so far, the cases are sliding down as of today. This variant seems to be milder amongst the others except that it is highly infectious. Despite its milder symptoms, the health experts say that it still is a dangerous virus especially to the unvaccinated and those with co-morbidities.

@JudyEv True if you can avoid it, you should take all necessary precautions. We were able to stay safe the whole year of 2021 and we even went to my home province last Christmas. When we returned back home, we thought we were still safe from it but my son got it then my wife got mild symptoms too. So, we have to isolate ourselves for a week or so. I am lucky, that despite being exposed to them I remained asymptomatic.

@rsa101 I presume you've been vaccinated? It does seem to make the disease less severe. We have had three jabs now.

That is the advice we're getting too. Not quite so dangerous to most but more infectious. We are both considered 'old' and Vince has other health issues so we are taking all the precautions we can.

So sorry I am concerned the world is ending. This whole thing is wiping people out in more ways then one. I feel so sorry for the young people and kids having to miss so much we enjoyed in the past.

Yes, the virus here too is spreading fast and the number of deaths due to the virus is increasing day by day. You are fortunate that you were not much affected by the virus until now. We still have lots of restrictions here and it looks like things won't get normal as they used to be in the past.

They have cancelled most of the public events during the past two years. They are talking about reopening after mid February IF the situation seems to be under control, that I fear is not the case.

@JudyEv - Our doctors are saying that most people they checked have developed antibodies (both vaccinated and non vaccinated). This means that almost all the population have been in contact with the virus.

That is a really kool photo. Yeah, so much is canceled these days because so many are careless and cause health problems by not taking the suggested precautions. I don't go to events because of those kinds of people.

Just wear a mask and face shield and you'll probably be totally safe to go most places. I suppose if there are too many people who don't practice social distancing you'd be at risk.

It is sad that so many events are being canceled. Our basketball teams have only been able to play two of their scheduled games this year because other teams that don't practice the same preventive measures we do have had to cancel due to Omicron.

@JudyEv Most people who refuse are either ignorant of the science and believe the conspiracy whackos, or refuse on religious grounds and take no vaccines at all. Here in the US, nearly all anti-vaxxers fall into the first category.

Some of our sports teams are probably problems in that respect too. And one star Aussie Rules football player refuses to be vaccinated so he is out of the team for the moment. I'm not sure why he is refusing.

@JudyEv I am right there with you. I'd prefer Covid did not exist at all. I'd prefer no one gets it. The problem I have had with Covid from the word go has never been Covid itself. It has been the reaction to it which has disrupted jobs, life, supply chain, and the pursuit of happiness, all for really no good reason, but definitely with an agenda.

At some point we have to open our border because of economic factors. But many groups/organisations are fearful and not willing to put planned events at risk. It's like the (state of WA) government has handed responsibility back to individuals/businesses and they are suddenly not willing to take risks although they were vocal enough when everything was closed.
