I had a fight with a pickle jar

At least that is what I think has caused this awful bruise around the base of my right thumb. I had a new jar of pickles and we wanted some with our hamburger last night. Hubby could not get the jar open. Neither could I. We each pounded on it, with knife handle, and hand. I ran it under hot water. Hubby went looking for his channel locks--a kind of tool. It was outside in the car so we gave up. We ate our burgers, and enjoyed some chips, etc. AFTER we were completely done, hubby was able to get it open. This bruise is on the outside of my hand straight down from my thumb to my wrist. It is also inside in my palm. I never noticed it until this afternoon. It does not hurt. It just looks suspicious. At first I thought it had to be from the nerve conduction test as the doctor said I might have some bruising. He however had indicated the bruising would be on my bicep and tricep. Nope, I am pretty sure it was from doing battle with that stubborn pickle jar.

I keep forgetting to buy one of those jar openers. I do the same thing, can't open stuff anymore, no power in the hands.

We should all rush out and get an opener. I am requesting my prescriptions in easy open bottles. We do not need childproof caps.

I find it hard to open so many things these days too. Not only are the medicine bottles impossible to open but I can barely see the directions for use

@GardenGerty Not that I remember, I have a jar opener that works well, but I do not remember I opened jars in the past few days.

I will turn the jar upside down and give the lid a good whack straight down on the floor. It usually works the first time. Occassionally I have to do it twice.

We did mash it upside down. It was funny, after we finished our hamburgers, Bob was strong enough to do it.

If you are taking blood thinners, this is probably bruising from trying to open those pickles:)

No, I do not take blood thinners, but it still is probably from the pickle jar.

Here's the best tip for lids ever. I have no hand strength and it works every time. You need to release some of the pressure from the seal around the lid first. I use one of those little can punch things (in the picture), slip the pointed end under the edge of the jar anywhere and just pry it a tiny bit. It's not enough to bend the lid or anything, barely takes any pressure. I might do it a couple places around the lid if it's a wide jar (like a pickle jar). Releasing that tiny bit of pressure allows me to just unscrew the lid with my hand after that, no other tools required.

@GardenGerty I think I learned it on Instagram or something and was like, "This won't work." And then it did and I was like "HOW DID I GO MY WHOLE LIFE NOT KNOWING THIS????"

I wouldn't doubt your bruise is from trying to open that pickle jar. Figures it would open after you ate

I get so frustrated when I can't open a jar. I have some of those rubber gripper doo-dah's (forget the name) and they help.

Sometimes, I just cannot get a jar opened, even with one of those rubber things that are supposed to help. If I am alone and can't pick on someone to try to loosen it up, I tap around the edges with a table knife. Sometimes that works. My other trick that sounds dumb is to run tap water in the kitchen sink until it's super hot and run the hot water over and around the lid. It always works for me if nothing else does. My neighbor has an electric jar opener. I don't want one, that would be yet one more dumb appliance to clutter up my kitchen counters.

I agree about "one more appliance." I tried the hot water, and the tapping. I guess all of our efforts together is why he could loosen it after he ate.

@GardenGerty Too many small appliances for everything now. I mean...I can cook rice, I've done it for years and years, so I don't need a cooker for that. Mine turns out wonderfully well with the old fashion method of a pan and a lid and the few ingredients--water, rice, butter, and salt. Not hard. Just an example, if I didn't think this way I would have no counter space.

Too many jars are like that. Drives me nuts sometimes then I just get my icepick out and poke a hole in the lid so it's easy to twist off.

You know, I understand the necessity of creating tamper-resistant jars after that Tylenol tampering thing back in the 80s, but having jars that nobody short of Superman can open is a little ridiculous!

I think as we get older we can burst a tiny blood vessel from doing something like this and that causes bruising.

@GardenGerty Nice. You're right, not too as strong as we were. If you got a dollar store, near by, good to check it to see anything you like on it.
