My School Days ~ Kindergarten

Thanks to @JudyEv I now have a topic for a discussion. By the way, my raised bed garden is being worked on right now, but to get to school, I had to walk through the woods similar to that in my photo. It saved time. My mother walked me to school and picked me up daily. Having two young brothers at home made it difficult, so she eventually hired a 6th grade boy to walk me home. One day as I waited outside the school for what seemed like forever, he never showed up. Perhaps he was ill. So I crossed a busy road at five years old and walked all the way home myself. It was only a 10 minute walk, but very scary and long to me. I came across a snake sunning itself across the path. Too afraid to jump over it, I stood there frozen. My mom came running to me through the woods frantic, but relieved to see me. I caused her first gray hair. I won’t bother telling you how I wet my pants every day in story circle. I just backed my chair away little by little. I was too shy back in the day and terrified of snakes even then.

@DianneN - I know how you feel. I was walking in our lawn when I noticed the grass moving and there was one moving in my direction. I rushed out of the lawn and almost fell in the little river that runs along our property. I fear I will have a heart attack one day, should I step on one of them. I would like to have a powder that repels them, I fear it does not exist. I know there are always two near our garden and they always go to mute their skin in my rosemary bush.

@LadyDuck They are attracted to water. We put in an inground pool at our other house and hubs found many in the filter basket. I saw one in a little flower bed near the pool and one on the deck. No more pools for me!!!! Luckily, we moved to our house here shortly after. I refused to go in the pool or sit on the deck after those experiences. Ick to the shedded skin. I've seen snakeskins in the driveway and on top of a litten flower garden near my garage. I really should move to Ireland, New Zealand, or Antarctica!!!! There are different kinds of snake powders out. I'm going to try them all.

@DianneN - I would move to Ireland just because there are no snakes there, Antarctica is too cold. New Zealand has no native snakes, but there are the yellow bellied sea snakes there, no New Zealand.

I promise, this time I won't ask about you wetting yourself... I'm sure your mom was terrified, thinking you'd gotten lost or kidnapped! And, you caused more than one gray hair, I'm sure...

She was terrified for me. Oh, the things I saw going on in those woods left me with nightmares. More stories to tell including wetting myself

@DianneN I believe it. Kids are too precious not to worry about them even after their grown and capable of taking care of themselves. So you have LOTS of material for new discussions?

I think we have all caused our parent's first gray hairs. I even gave my grandma a few extra ones. Snakes are scary. All slithering and beady eyed. Ugh!

@DianneN ........Same here. My first encounter with one was a water snake slithering in the grass. I shrieked and the guy with me was amused. It was harmless but not to me. Yes, poisonous and dangerous is how I think of them all too.

I think my brothers gave the most gray hairs out in my family I did do my part, too. I am still terrified of snakes of any size or color. To me, they are all poisonous and dangerous!!!!

@DianneN Although I have heard some scary stories about the woods, still I have all these romantic notions about the woods. Ah, I will look out for the wet post .

My memories are kinda fuzzy because we moved so much from the time I started kindergarten til 3rd grade, I do get bits and pieces but not of school, mostly of mom packing stuff up all the time or else unpacking

Wow, although it was a different time, I wouldn't have let my little one walk through the woods alone to get to school. Also, if I found out they crossed a busy road themselves, I would have been quite upset. At one point as a kid, about 7 or 8 we lived on a busy highway and as luck would have it my best friend lived on the other side. I had to always tell my mother when I was going to cross and she would watch..Although she did let me walk to the store by myself as it was on the same side.

I agree! My son brought home a shed snakeskin when he was in 5th grade. I made him keep it in a baggie and refused to clean his room. I made him clean it himself until that snakeskin was tossed when he went to college Shivers!

My wife would have screamed so loud the noise alone might have killed the snake. I would have probably tried to catch it and bring it home.

Happy to see you after all this time. My pleasure. My photo is gone My mother told me never to read in a moving vehicle. I don’t think she was considering jets at the time I never had to take a school bus. Don’t even know if they were invented back then [em]lol[/em. I did go on buses for field trips. Didn’t get I’ll, but found them unsafe and noisy.

How scary for a small child. I used to walk to school by myself; but I don't know how old I was. One day as I was trudging through thigh-high s**w, a cop car came by; and the kind policeman told me there was no school. They took me home in the police car which was nice of them. Maybe I should write about this? Have a good weekend.

That's a great story. You should write about it. When I was older, I walked to school with my brothers and neighborhood kids.

Oh! That was a brave journey for a five year old. Even today I will freeze at the sight of snake. And I have struggled with my sense of direction all my life. I would have definitely taken a wrong route

I am not scared of the small garden snakes but I will not touch them. I think they were under the shed but left after Blackie was catching them., I am just glad they are gone. One thing I do not like is a mouse they are just ugly and Blackie had one last summer and Dave made him turn it loss and the mouse ran really fast across the street. Buttercup has never caught a snake or mouse.

I'm afraid of all snakes, even the baby garden snakes. Mice don't bother me anymore, since Doodles used to catch them, moles, and chipmunks constantly. I got used to seeing them, but had hubs shovel them into the woods.
