Foliage or flowers - do you have a preference?

We visited my sister today and I took these photos in her garden. She has some really lovely variegated plants which I’ve used for three of the images. With such pretty leaves, not all plants really need flowers. However, who can argue with the beauty of a hibiscus flower. I know several myLot members grow these lovely flowers too. They always look very attractive and come in a variety of colours. They are really a tropical plant but do well in milder climates too. In our village, many have planted low-growing shrubs that have dark red foliage. These seem to be hardy and a good choice here. So do you prefer flowers or foliage or do you like both?

I've always used flowers, but foliage is a nice descriptive way to describe them. Kind of classy isn't it, a way to jazz it up a bit, lol. Hibiscus is a really nice flower and popular here. We also see a lot of hydrangeas too. Here is my garden photo. You can see a couple of them I planted.

Your plants look very healthy. I guess the best plants are those that have flowers but also have attractive foliage when there are no flowers.

@dgobucks226 It makes all the difference if you can find a spot where a plant is happy.

@JudyEv Yes, they are happy in that location. That one eventually bloomed as well. Nice pink color blooms

I love both, but with our cold Canadian winters I have alot of indoor house plants that are not flowering, so maybe I prefer those.

With such cold winters, you would have to choose your plants very carefully.

I love all those plants, we should keep them inside here, they would not survive our cold winters.

How long plants last depends very much on what the plant is I think. Some only last a very short time.

I like both, actually. The colors are nice to look at. My husband has talked about planting flowers in our weed bed, but he also doesn't want to attract bees. So, it'll be interesting what he winds up doing.

@JudyEv Just doesn't like them as far as I know. He also understandably doesn't want to attract another bug that could get in the house. We have enough trouble with roaches and flies and other things. So, I understand where he's coming from.

We have plants that flower and some that are just interesting foliage. I like flowers but like plants that have "character", too. *shrug*

@JudyEv We have both types in the house and outside. As long as they're healthy and doing well, I'm happy with them.

I love both flowers and foliage, I miss the big ferns that grew each year in my garden in Latvia, My cat Sid used to love sitting by them in the summertime,

@judyev Hibiscus always transports me back to Africa where it grew around our house in abundance. Most of our pot plants indoors are flowerless and it’s actually quite calming.
