Salt on melon? Yay or Nay?

I have friends who think they can't eat watermelon or cantaloupe or any kind of melon, unless they cover it with salt right before they eat it. My family never did this, but when I lived in the south everyone did. We were the 'Yankee' family who didn't salt the melon but ate it plain.
I've tried it several times, I would just rather have it plain and sweet and cold. Do you salt your melon?

Eww! Gross! Why would people put salt on a melon? That would just screw up the flavor! (But I have seen Pretty do that and I know my mom used to put salt on watermelon. Some of my brothers did but most of us didn't use salt before eating watermelon or cantaloupe.)

I never understood this, either. To me it just ruins the entire experience. I want it to be cold and sweet, not salty.

It taste a bit different with salt on it. I don't put a lot of salt. Actually, I eat watermelon without salt most of the time

@MarieCoyle I just cut a watermelon a little while ago. I don't mind if it's not as cold, as long as it's sweet. Once, Pretty couldn't eat all her bowl of watermelon so she gave it to me. I took one bite and put her bowl in the fridge and left it for her.

I love watermelon but not cantaloupe because I'm allergic to it. I mostly eat watermelon plain. Occasionally, I put so salt on it.

I usually buy the smaller round watermelons, they don't have seeds in them. Well, once in a while I will find one or two, but not like a seeded melon.

I know that in the US, different parts of our country like different things to eat, and fix them different ways.

@MarieCoyle Parmesan cheese is good with pears, Cheddar is excellent with walnuts, blue cheese(French Roquefort) is good with celery.

Nuts and cheese are always good together. I haven't tried parmesan and pears. I like to just eat pears plain, but maybe I will try that, as it sounds really good.

Rather reminds me of apple pie with a chunk of cheddar cheese. The two taste comparisons go well together.

Do you buy watermelon already cut in sections? Or do you buy the whole melon and cut it yourself?

I have never put sugar on watermelon, but I do hate it when I get the occasional melon that doesn't taste sweet and isn't very good.

It seems tragic to cover good, natural sweetness with salt, but I know some people seem to love it.

I've had black salt before, but I usually purchase the Himalayan pink salt.

I remember as a kid we would have watermelon parties, and one time I grabbed a piece with salt. I was so disgusted I ran to my grandmother's house and washed my mouth out in the sink over and over. That was the last time I've had watermelon with salt, so I just like it plain.

Oh, wow...I would have done the same thing. I remember trying it as a kid--once. To me, it truly tasted terrible.

One of my daughters loves salted caramel ice cream. I tried it, it's pretty good stuff.

I do like kettle corn, a popcorn that is sort of caramel-ly and salty at the same time. I also like some of the salted caramel products, but they are a rare treat. But no salt on my melon!

As I kid I sometimes did. Also salt on tomatoes, and grapefruit. I do not salt melons now. I always salt tomatoes though I have seen people put sugar on it. I like my grapefruit plain as well. We do not need more salt in our diet.

One of my grandmothers told me that her own mom and dad put sugar and cream on their sliced tomatoes. I have heard of others doing that, but we always eat ours sliced with salt and pepper, or on a sandwich, or salad, and so forth. I've never even thought of salting a grapefruit. They are already tart enough for me.

I've sprinkled cinnamon on slices of apple before, but I will pass on the salt thing on apples.

Nay, the first time ever I ever learned about salt on watermelon was when I was young spending the night with my friend. I saw her parents put salt on watermelon. I was shocked. I later told my Mom and she said that it wasn't odd that some people like it. I always thought it was wierd.

I did try a bite of it once, just to see how it tasted. A big fat no from me, it wasn't good at all.
