Lowline, but not lowlife, Angus cattle - introducing Grandma and Mum

It’s the cute cows turn to be in the spotlight today. They are called Grandma and Mum although they are not related. Their breed is Lowline Angus, a modern Australian breed, created by selective breeding from Aberdeen Angus. The height is about 60% of the standard Angus and they are polled (no horns). Although one of the smallest cattle breeds, they are not dwarfs. They are ideal for hobby farms as they cause less damage to pasture and don’t need such high fences. They are quiet-tempered. These are definitely on the old side and seem to have an accumulation of fat in some odd places. They get pellets every second day and also like apples.

I can see weird bulges on their hips. But they are still cute.

@JudyEv It could be a normal age thing. Most are not kept that long. Especially if they stop producing calves.

I wonder if they are sort of lymphomas?

That's true. There are sheep and the two cows, not to mention Qwacka.

I’ve never heard of these kinds. I saw such a tiny cow while driving around today. Probably the smallest baby cow I’ve ever been seen.

Calves can be very cute - just as cute as any other baby animal.

I would guess the one on the left to be the older of the two... You and Vince are getting to see and play with quite the menagerie at this housesit.

@JudyEv The way she's carrying herself in the photo reminds me of the way one of our cows carried herself shortly before she passed away. Please watch her closely.

@DaddyEvil We will. The owner has been expecting her to pass away at any time but she keeps going.

Angus are such handsome cattle. My Dad raised polled Herefords.

We had polled Herefords too but then the heifers were having trouble calving (calves had big heads) so in the end he got an Angus bull to put over the heifers.

Quite informative for me! Interesting what all selective breeding can bring out. Yet the Grandma and Mum make me laugh a bit!!

@JudyEv Send them over to India and after eating what all will be offered to them, they might need even more dieting!

They are not the prettiest of cows. They need to go on a diet.

@JudyEv Stray cattle are too many. Sometimes they block traffic as well. Resources as well as willingness to manage more cows and some Bulls is missing here. The numbers are to quite high as well.

Is that fat natural for the breed or it is only these cows that have it?

I think it is probably natural for very old cows that get too fat.

You know me, I know next to nothing about livestock. It sounds like the place you're caring for is owned by real animal lovers.

The Aberdeen Angus meat is excellent. I feel bad eating the meat when I see those beautiful animals, but I confess that time by time I like a good steak. Swiss cows have horns.

Not heard of lowline Angus cattle. The only thing I know about hobby farms is what Crocodile Dundee said in one of his films!
