Did You Know You Could Lose Your Home?

I was watching some episodes of Judy Justice(Judge Judy's newest show) and there were several people there in litigation over Pitbulls and other high-risk dog breeds hurting other people's animals or people. Judge Judy explained something I hadn't been aware of at one point that I thought was interesting. If a person owns a home and they have a high-risk breed dog (like a Pitbull, Perro de Presa Canario, Rottweiler, Bulldog, Doberman, and several others)they need to check and see what the local laws are concerning their particular breed and home owner's insurance. There have been cases of people losing their homes. People don't have the high-risk type of home insurance they need to have if they have a high-risk breed pet and so if something happens with their dog and they are found libel they can be sued. I'm sure many of you are aware but I thought I would put this information out there in case someone didn't know.

I knew this about insurance. Many years ago, I evicted someone, and they left their rottweiler. The dog was so friendly and sweet, old and couldn't move very well but my insurance said no and dropped me since I was going to keep her and care for her in old age. I didn't tell them, but they saw her when they did their annual photos. I called all around and no one would cover me until she was gone. I found her a good home and thankfully it was someone who was able to hide her. I was able to get another insurance after. I learned a lot about animals and insurance back then and even now.

That's quite a story. I see both sides of this issue. It would be very hard. Some insurance companies just charge higher rates I thought.

@celticeagle Not for more dangerous (in the publics opinion), dogs. They can be sued for a lot of money.

I had a rescue friend adopt a Rottie that no one wanted. Her insurance threatened to drop her, so she told the insurance guy to please come over, which he did. The dog was older, very calm, and very sweet and loving. He didn't raise her rates. I was bitten rather badly once on the arm when trying to help a pit bull that was supposedly not a threat to anyone. Of course, the owner had no insurance at all. And you are right, there are cases that have been very costly, and people have lost their homes.

And it just comes down to being responsible and honest about it.

That's what I am getting at. People need to check and be honest if they have one of these breeds.

I thought so too. And have always been a cat person. I wonder about the Blue Heeler breed. Ole Stryder used to bite the post man.

@celticeagle Read my comment above. The original dog trainer that I took Sally to said that for sure Heelers are on the Oh God list.

I had not heard about that. Kitty is pretty vicious toward mice and fence lizards, but I've never seen her attack a person.

I think some breeds can revert to instinctual behavior in some situations, no matter how well trained or treated they are. I'm no expert but I think this could be true.

@celticeagle I am sure that's true. Especially when really stressed.

I know that there are several high risk breeds, but any untrained pet is a risk. I only ever have been bit by a small poodle. There ought to be a way to insure an animal that would not risk homeownership.

Well, I can’t because I don’t have a pit bull. I do know that they ask those questions about certain breeds (they didn’t bother asking about my pet rattlesnakes, though [kidding!!!!]) when you’re updating or renewing homeowners policies.

We have to register the animals we own and some breeds are not allowed. All animals owners have to be insured in case the animals cause problems.

Years ago an insurance agent asked me what kind of dog did I have? I showed him Sally my gentle Heeler. Agent was fine then but Heelers are on the no no list, like Dobies.
