Here, on this beautifully gorgeous autumn morning, I present the next song on my list of favorites that have the word “something” in it. Some personal notes: Greg, go collect your Vegas winnings, ‘cause I know you bet big on this. And Daddy Evil? You might know this one.
From Captain Obvious, here’s today’s song.
#5: Something - The Beatles
Actually, the question becomes who didn’t see this one showing up?
Yes, it had to be here. One of the most beautiful love songs from the Fab Four, it’s so good that notorious rock and roll detractor Frank Sinatra hailed it as “the greatest love song of the last 50 years.”
Obviously Sinatra said that over 50 years ago, so this song is now finishing off a century of being terrific.
Something
Written by George Harrison
Recorded by The Beatles
From Abbey Road, 1969
All I have to do is think of her:

It is a lovely love song. I remember when it first came out. I was a bit offset by it at first. I look at it differently now days.

It was a little different (okay, a lot different) from what we normally got from the Beatles.

The Chairman knew what he was talking about! Georgie Boy provided a preview of what was to come with his classic solo album "All Things Must Pass." Considered one of the best and most successful albums by an ex-Beatle

I’m more fond of Band on the Run, but I always liked Paul best.

@FourWalls Definitely, Paul's mastery of producing hit singles could not be matched by the other Fabs. Even with The Beatles.

I would hope “You Know My Name (Look Up My Number)” would be one that you don’t like. I think Paul cringes if someone brings that up.

@FourWalls This is one of those songs where I thought maybe they were just releasing a jam session. I stand corrected. This is not a song I think stands the test of time.

It’s a good combination of melody and love poured out in a song.

You figure that Sinatra had such musical tunnel vision that if it got his attention it was special.

He did indeed. They called him “the quiet Beatle,” and a lot of his songs were more introspective than the “Love Me Do” songs. Having said that, he also wrote “Taxman.”

It’s certainly one of their most enduring songs, which is saying something considering how legendary their music is.
