The Good, The Bad, and the Hopeful

What you might wonder am I talking about? My weight. When I left here last March, I was trying to get to 180. I've since seen my doctor; he told me the Mediterranean diet would help. It didn't. I maintained. Then I saw my Gastro to have a colonoscopy. He told me I need a high-fiber diet. That didn't work either. I continued to climb. An article in the grocery magazine showed the possibility of a vegan diet. Now, if you know me, you know I love eggs. I'm on a vegetarian diet for 12 weeks. It's supposed to take off 11 pounds in 12 weeks. Not happening. I'm maintaining at 200. Yes, I've gained 20 pounds instead of taking it off. What's left? Going back to what works - Paleo - Whole30. When I was shopping this morning, I found the Whole30 cookbook. At $8, it was a deal as it's normally $30. It's now part of my library. I'm hoping to get my weight down before Christmas. I will NOT eat anything, not on the diet plan. That got me in trouble last year. I've been in an uphill battle that I intend to win. Are you struggling with your weight? I hope you can find a diet that works for you and stick with it. Thanks for reading. The image belongs to me.

The only thing that works for me is 1200 to 1500 calories a day, no matter what I eat just stay in that count, and walking

Like Angie, this is the only method that has ever worked well for me. I have tried so many diets, fad diets, liquid diets, special diets, and on and on. I set a calorie allowance and try very hard to stick to that. It gets easier as time goes on, and it has worked wonderfully well for me. I struggled with weight issues for years and years.

I do have a weight issue. I’ve lost 35 pounds over the past year with God’s help and Weight Watchers. I need to lose more — I still weigh a hundred and too much — but this time last year I weighed TWO hundred and too much. Prayers for your success.

I am sorry you are stuck and cannot lose more weight. For me is the same as @andriaperry, I keep my calories under 1200 a day and I avoid fats as much as I can. Everything in moderation.

@just4him For me it also worked the Scarsdale Diet, but it's not really healthy as you have to give up too many things.

I'm vegetarian but I eat eggs and cheese. I need to gain weight but my sugar is a little high so I had to cut down on carbs. It's a no win situation. I hope your old diet works for you.

The only way I could take the extra kilos off was when I was at the hospital 2 months ago for a week. I first had an awful gastroenteritis that is very contagious but only kills babies and old people. I´m not sure if I´m a baby. When I go past the stage of IV needles and the like, I looked at the food they gave there. There was no way I´d eat that. I went gown 10 kilos (22 pounds) in one week). I would not recommend it. Now I´m trying to keep it down by eating very small portions.

I have always struggled with weight. But, that's because I don't eat enough. I never have. At some point, I decided I don't care anymore. My doctor might yell at me, but it's not adversely affecting my health and has been pretty stable. So that's all I am going to focus on for now.

@just4him Yep, I'm fairly active. My right side functions, but is paralyzed so I am off balanced. There's a lot of factors in terms of my weight, but I will never be the ideal weight for may age/height. And, I'm okay with that.

Weight? That's me. I'm sorry you are struggling so. All the holidays are calorie loaded oriented. Clumsy but true statement. Only thing that worked for me was to go to a support group. I learned the emotional reasons on why I was eating. I need to run not walk to such a group again. Its a life long one day at a time commitment. I flunked but I am not my failure.

@just4him Yes. Overeaters Anonymous supports all people having issues with food- from anorexia to bulemia and folks like me who doesn't have a no button in me. This might sound very strange to you but I learned to stand up in front of others and read my poetic work to others in that meeting hall. Folks there listened to me and nobody commented, good or bad. They just sat and listened. I finally made the break through to be brave enough to stand in front of a room filled with people looking at me.

@sallypup That must have been hard to stand in front of people and read your poetry and not get feedback. I would find that very hard. I admit it would make me quit the group. When I read my work at Writer's Guild, I get feedback that helps me become a better writer.

Jay uses fasting to keep his weight down. It's torture, in the highest form! My LDLcholesterol needs to be lower and my HDL needs to increase. I'm doing my best to include fatty fish each week, salmon and sardines. She wants me back in 6 weeks, I need to make some dietary changes. Oatmeal is another plus, it's a good source of fiber, also. I'm adding vitamin D, as soon as this supplement arrives in the mail.

Fish will be back on my diet in three weeks. Fasting is hard to do. I need to cut the grains again, which means no more oatmeal. I'll need to get my fiber from fruits and veggies only. I noticed when I cut the grains the first time, I lost the weight.

@just4him I have to limit my carbohydrates, fats and cholesterol. With diabetes, low carb is the only means that works. I love fish and all kinds of meat, so I always get plenty to eat. If we go out to a restaurant, that's the hard part. We're not doing this very often, maybe once a month. We ordered pizza/subs for supper last night and I got stomach issues from this meal. It's a good thing, because we can't afford it anymore. All those prices have skyrocketed!

My weight has been an issue for many years, up and down...in past 20 years more up than down..however, I find it very difficult to stick to any kind of diet for long. I am going to try hormone replacement here shortly and see how that goes you can lose 15 to 20 pounds with that. I might add Weight Watchers as well. It is a vey liveable diet and have done it before with decent results.

I am in the same boat. Have tried everything under the sun but nothing seems to be working. One of the reasons for me is I am most of the time in the house working on my computer and that must be the reason for my weight gain. Tomorrow is the last day of my job so hopefully from the first, I will get time to go for walks and be more active. Let's see if that works and if some miracle happens before Christmas.

@just4him I thought what you were doing for weight loss was working. I am sorry it did not work out and how is the present thing you are doing? I start my journey about 6 years ago or more and did it little by little and started out giving up things and it took me a while to be able to look at food and not want it. I can fast and not want food and it is also fine not to eat. I am maintaining my weight and do exercises both of my own and online. Love the title.

It was working until I decided to 'eat' during the holidays last year. That messed me up completely and it's been an uphill battle since. Then the doctor had his idea on what would work for me, NOT. The gastro told me I needed high fiber because of my ulcerative colitis. They also found a couple of other problems with the colonoscopy, so I will incorporate the high fiber into the original diet plan.

I just stick to a healthy diet plan, timely meals and eating everything in moderation. That has worked with me. I weigh perfect for my height and body type. I have exercise regime and I stick to that. It's become a part of my life because of my insulin dependent diabetes. I am a vegetarian by choice, but do take eggs and fish sometimes.
