Are you an astute grocery shopper?

I’ve just read a very interesting article about how supermarkets arrange their stores and shelves to entice shoppers to spend more and to buy specific products. I’m sure we are all aware of some of the tricks so forgive me if I seem to be preaching to the converted. And these comments will not apply to all supermarkets.
Firstly, when you enter a store, you go into a ‘decompression zone’. There might be floral displays along with a colourful array of fresh fruits and vegetables. There will be muted, slow to mid tempo music, bright lights, no windows and no clocks. This all helps relax the customer. If we’re feeling good, we’ll probably spend more time in the store and quite possibly more money.
You might then choose your trolley. The bigger the trolley, the more you’re likely to buy. Some research has shown shoppers spend up to 40% more if they have a large trolley.
Most supermarkets are designed to be slightly disorienting. The grid layout encourages people to walk up and down the store. The bread won’t be anywhere near the milk. Cereals are displayed at kids’ eye level, cheaper options from smaller manufacturers are placed higher and/or lower than similar store-brand items.
High consumption of ultra-processed foods are cheap to make and sell well but lead to increased disease and obesity. And don’t trust products in the ‘health food aisle’. A product low in sugar is often high in fat or salt.
Postcodes (zipcodes) influence the products stocked too. Shelf space allocated to unhealthy foods and drinks will be 9.7% higher in low socioeconomic areas. ‘End caps’ – those displays at the ends of the aisles - are prime real estate in the world of supermarkets. Eye-catching colours like red and yellow play their part.
While waiting at the checkout, the consumer is again faced with temptation. One survey found that 78% of checkout shelf space was devoted to discretionary foods such as confectionary, magazines and soft drinks. Unhealthy food is often on promotion much more often and with big discounts.
I will be even more aware in future about how my choices are being influenced by all these things.
The photo is mine of grapes in a vineyard.

There is one store I shop at that has the worst carts (trolleys). I usually only need the top part unless I'm buying toilet paper. I can't see past the long lower part and am constantly crashing into things.

I thought you were always running your cart into my legs on purpose, just to get my attention!
I'll know you really didn't want me to stop and chat for a minute the next time you do that.

@DaddyEvil Little kids pushing trolleys are a bit of a hazard too. Some stores here have kids' trolleys but they're still a bit of a danger.

Sometimes I do give in to temptations like a nice cookie/chocolate/Sweets etc here and there.
Yet otherwise I try to keep to the plan and pick things that we need regularly and not give in to gimmicks or offers.
I do however buy extra Milk and cookies sometimes.
The best way not to give in is to prepare a Grocery List beforehand and not give in to temptations !

All retailers have their tricks, and supermarkets are no exception. The bane of every shopper is when they move their products around, and that is done purposefully so that shoppers have to spend more time in the store searching for items.

It's through tricks that most customers get lured to make more purchases

The photo is sooo nice! Were you there to pick your own grapes or just taking the photo for a friend or client? The grapes look delicious!
Now that you've given away all of the grocery store tricks, do you think people will pay attention to what you've told them? (Walmart in the US uses all of these tricks to entice shoppers to buy products they don't need. I've helped set up displays and arrange aisles just like you've described.)
There are other "tricks", too. Jumble bins in stores are purposely set up so shoppers will have to dig through them because research shows that if a customer had to dig through a bin to find something, they will spend more time looking through the bin and will spend 20% more on items in the bin than they would spend if the items in the bin are neatly arranged on shelves. (I learned that when I arranged a jumble bin my last Christmas that I worked in Walmart. I had just finished sorting everything in the bin neatly so the customers wouldn't have to dig and sort things for themselves when an assistant manager came by, saw what I was doing and told me it looked nice but he needed me to jumble everything back up and then explained why...)

@JudyEv This is the first comment from you that myLot has notified me about. I was starting to wonder if I'd said something wrong.

While I was reading yourpost I was thinking about what I did and what I didn+t as a buyer. Your post enlightened me. I will try not to forget my list again on the dining room table.

Yes the vineyard looks really nice. I feel disoriented with the grocery store in my place because they rearrange their products again. I need to always ask the staff where is the item I am looking for

@JudyEv I see. I already know where are the items are until they change them all again. I wonder how often will they do that. It's nice looking at the vineyard. Haven't seen a vineyard before

That might be deliberate too. It keeps you in the store longer and you might pick up a few extra items.

I'm pretty focused when I go to buy stuff. Usually, I know exactly what I'm there for and where they're hiding it. I do have a weakness for the chocolate bars by the checkout.

@JudyEv On rare occasion, I scope out a whole store. Only if I expect to go there regularly. It's to make a mental note of where everything is.

I write my list, I know exactly where the things are in the stores where I go, as they are in the same place since we moved here 16 years ago. I get my cart outside, my list in my hand and I do not even look around.

@JudyEv They know the Swiss mentality, Swiss people love routine and they hate to have to look around to find what they need. They know they would lose customers if they move things around. The major Swiss grocery store moved everything about 12 years ago when made big changes. People complained for weeks.

I stick with my list. They get nothing extra out of me. I also always look for the store brand.

Fun name for a shopping cart
I agree with every item in that post but have to say that I enjoy the mellow music played in my store, lol. Fortunately, I work off a shopping list which limits my impulse purchases. Another reason for a list, I'd be lost as the grocery store layout without one
Great post!!!

@dgobucks226 I sort of worked that out eventually. Same as our car boot is something else in your country - a trunk, I think.

@JudyEv We've always called them shopping carts in New Jersey/America.
We use the term trolleys for transport vehicles, trolley cars/buses.

Your description mostly applies to supermarkets here as well. When I go to supermarket, I buy what I need but I'll check if there are any items on special promotion.

Well, you know, when I go shopping, I'm on a budget, sy no matter what, I only buy what I can afford. But you know, yes, especially Walmart is spaced the way the article says.

. I think most of the supermarkets here are like that in your description.

Someone on here asked and I had no idea but there are shelves full of them.
