Playing up a storm on a gum/eucalyptus leaf

We spent yesterday at Vince’s brother’s place. He had invited two old musician friends to join him for a musical afternoon. You might think the gentleman in the photo, Keith Lethbridge, is playing a harmonica/mouth organ but it’s actually a leaf from a potted plant that he had with him. More often a eucalyptus leaf is used. I have a small book about ‘how to play a gum leaf’ but I never got very far with it. Keith is a very interesting man. He has won national awards for his bush poetry, plays numerous instruments, is a marriage celebrant and a very accomplished square dance caller, having once travelled America for free calling square dances at various venues. As you might imagine, it was a very enjoyable afternoon. In the evening, our nieces, great nieces and nephews arrived and we enjoyed a barbecue together.

Yes, I've seen a person playing music with a leaf. That's amazing.

mirror bush
There is a weed bush here known as the mirror plant, because of its shiny leaves. When I was a boy, we used to play music on those leaves too. You fold them in half, and blow while holding the leaves taut. We were just mucking around though, and lacked the talent of the talented man you talked of there, though. picture, courtesy of Wikipedia

I didn't actually see that he folded his leaf in half but he might have. You could easily recognise the tune.

Really? That's amazing playing music with a leaf of a plant. That requires certain skills. Very talented indeed. Having a barbecue with family members is a great time to spend the afternoon.

That must be similar to when people make sounds with a blade of grass. He sounds like an interesting sort of person, well rounded into many different areas.

I guess it is similar. The tune was easily recognisable.

I've heard of and seen people using a leaf between their palms to make sounds with but didn't realize anyone could make music that way. I'm glad you all had a good time.

@JudyEv I don't listen to music, so I may not recognize something anyone else can recognize. *shrug*

@DaddyEvil I didn't really mean 'you'. I should said 'One could easily recognise the tune' but that would sound pretentious and hopefully I'm not that.

It is common here as well using a leaf to produce music but not with a Gum leaf.

@JudyEv We as kids used to take a leaf from a particular plant - I do not know the name and place it between two pieces of broken tiles and blow and what a sound it used to make Try it.

That's interesting. I can make a noise with a blade of grass but certainly not a tune! Being a dance caller is a particular skill, you'd think it would be easy but it certainly isn't!

Once you get the noise, the tune is all done with the embouchure. I'd like to put it up here but we don't feel we should put it on YouTube and I think the file is too large to load like you would a photo. When he started learning to call dances, apparently he would cut out paper figures and would have them on the kitchen table, moving them around, etc and working out his 'call'.

What fun to sit around and enjoy the music. Amazing he was using a leaf. My Dad played a guitar and many friends and family would come over for what they called jam sessions. Good times.
