We've arrived at our house-sit

We’ve arrived at our house-sit and are partly settled. We knew the owner wouldn’t be here but she never locks the house so it was easy to get in. We’ve connected to the internet and found the air-conditioning switches so it’s all good. She is a sister-in-law to Dixie’s owner who lives just down the road a bit. Both houses are old and, as they’ve had the same owners over several generations, they’re both filled with antique furniture and paraphernalia. In the photo is their old piano. Like ours, it still has the candle-holders on it which is a bit unusual nowadays. It isn’t very well in tune but that’s okay. We don’t need to play it.

It is a beautiful antique. I wonder how old it really is? How long will you be staying at this house?

We have a piano that's not too dissimilar and it dates from 1898 (there's a code inside that tells you exactly what year it was made). Pianos only became common in the 19th century.

@Fleura @DaddyEvil I remember being highly excited as a teenager when I discovered there was a 'Piano Bible' which gave brands and codes so you could work out how old your piano was.

@JudyEv Wow that's amazing and beatiful! The piano you posted before was really a one with history. It was kept very good. I've never seen such a piano. Thanks for the information.

Those are the candle-holders I think, to shed light on the music.

As @Fleura says, before there was electricity, candles were placed in the holders. Here is a photo of our piano with candles.

In Australia, the houses that have been in the one family for more than a generation or two often have a lot of antiques. Nothing gets chucked out or sold.

I live a beautiful old piano. Every time I see one for free on Facebook I have to sigh and put it out if my mind. My daughter plays piano. We had one given to us when she was 10 years old. She played it everyday. Heavy old thing and we moved it 5 times. We left it behind for our neighbors when we last moved to a small apartment. Broke my heart.

@JudyEv they are beautiful but you need many strong backs to move one.

We have moved ours a number of times. We made room for it in our small space and put up with a smaller lounge area. I'm sorry you had to leave yours behind. The old ones are mostly big cumbersome things.

@ElusiveButterfly We used the same removalists about five times and they always groaned when they saw we still had the piano.

I might try to find a number inside the lid which is where it would normally be. Mostly I don't like touching anything in the house that I don't need to.

We're getting on okay so far except that people rarely leave us any space in the fridge for our stuff. In future, we'll tell prospective 'clients' that we'll need some fridge and freezer space.

I'm glad you got there safely. I had to chuckle about you turning on the air conditioning when I am up around here (a day before where you are now), turning on the now repaired heater. Those are great-looking antiques in that picture.

With two oil lamps, a candlestick and the two attached candle holders, there would definitely be enough light to see the notes on any sheet music.

In days gone by when there was no electricity we had the kind of lamp that is placed in the middle on top of the piano in your photo. The lamp needed kerosene to be lit. We had larger ones too all over the house.
