Exaggerating what you do for a living

My brother in law from my first marriage is unusual to say the least. He told me one time he was a professional chef for 10 years.. this was not true he was simply a cook at the local restaurant in town which really didn’t have a complicated menu at all. When he was working in plumbing with his father and hanging out after work at the local gas station talking to girls he told me he was the PR man (public relations man). This wasn’t true either. In fact for awhile his father would send him on calls and when he was done he would give them his own business card so when they needed more work done they’d call him. He was stealing his fathers customers. People didn’t like his work and would call my father in law complaining. Thinking about this reminded me of something I saw on Facebook where you take your job and describe it in a funny way and people would guess what you actually did for a living. I can’t come up with anything witty for myself. Photo is a set of silver items that were my grandmother’s as well as a little crystal ball my mother got me for Christmas.

That reminds me of last weekend...This guy who lives with the guy who fixed with my computer, he actually knows something about computers as well, but not like I think he things he does.He claims he was the head IT guy at the local hospital..and has an ID card for it. I mentioned the big binoculars he has and he said he was an astronmer, a model, an artist, guitar player etc....My thought was OK, if you are sooo accomplished why don't you have a job, and are living with a buddy? I was thinking his last name looked Italian and if I had said something about it, he probably would have said, yes, and I had an audience with the pope..or my lasagna when I worked in a restaurant was a James Beard award winner or something....lol.. A real legend in his own mind. He was nice though, and helpful.

@snowy22315 sounds like he may be an pathological liar. Taking selfies and sharing them on Instagram doesn’t make one a model you should have told him .

@snowy22315 oh I wouldn’t really say anything rude like that either. I’m nice even when I shouldn’t be. That is so sad all he has been through. Can’t blame him for being a little odd poor guy .

A lot of people exaggerate what they do for work. On a job application or resume it's expected that people will exaggerate what they've done...

@Daddyevil wow then if they expect I have exaggerated on mine they must think I’m a real loser. I was honest.

Too many people exaggerate. I remember my father saying that during the war, many of those in his company was pretending to be lawyers, doctors, important managers. When they came back from war all those "Important people" disappeared.

@LadyDuck I don’t know why people are like that. Just be honest who cares if you’re just a regular person and not a doctor etc. People worry too much about impressing others.

@shaggin This is something I never understood. There was a family living in a house in front of us. We knew they rented, well they insisted they had bought the house and they were the owners. They moved only two years later and I know the owners never arrived to cash the rent.

@LadyDuck I wonder why in the world they would lie about that. I wonder if they didn’t have permission to live there and the owners didn’t know someone was squatting there.

It's like the garbage man is called a sanitary engineer now. Pretty funny.

@sallypup oh gosh calling them an engineer makes them sound like they went and got a degree to so that.

I guess your BIL would argue that he was a professional chef - at least he cooked for a living! lol I know people used to call themselves a 'dustologist' rather than housewife. There was another fancy term too but I can't think of it at the moment.

@Judyev a dustologist how silly. I don’t keep up with dust all that well so I’ll stick to the housewife title.

@allknowing that is true . However with my brother in law I’m not friends with him on Facebook. I recall one time on Instagram he had listed he was a photographer ummm no that’s another lie. The things I wrote about him above are from talking to him in person. I can only imagine what he makes up to others.

@allknowing yep I always wonder the same thing. Maybe they are just trying to impress people on there who don’t know them in real life.

@RebeccasFarm I have some beautiful things but I’m weeding a lot of stuff out that has cluttered up the cupboards etc for years. The house was fully stocked when we moved in. My parents left anything they thought I may want that they didn’t need. Sometimes I surprised she didn’t take some of these things and get rid of the junk she has

@DianneN I started to polish it the next day and it made it look less pretty I thought I like the darker interesting color it had better. I turned the cup to the opposite side so it won’t show or I would have had to polish the entire set and make it a color I didn’t like. The big plate thing it sits on needed a good scrubbing with polish. I think this is two different sets by the design on things.

@shaggin I love shining silver, but mine is tarnished. It will have to wait until I return to Connecticut in the spring. I’ve only polished a few pieces in Florida only because we had guests for dinner.

My sister had the habit of boasting about her husband's post in the insurance company for which my husband had to face embrassement when they exposed it. This is actually a kind of inferiority complex.

@shaggin Yes, someone in the family has a better placed in the society, the one that's suffering from an inferiority complex or jealous will definitely cook up lies.

Those are beautiful silver items. I have never exaggerated what I do because I live by the rule if you exaggerate or don't tell the truth eventually you will get caught and then things will just get complicated and I have never wanted that to happen,

@Fleura yeah him saying he is the PR person is laughable but how he has treated his father is terrible. His father has done so much for him and he has never appreciated anything. He talks so bad about him and is never greatful no matter what he or anyone does for him. It’s very sad.

Often the job titles are inflated by the employers. Apparently many people prefer a fancier job title over a pay rise. Personally I would take the pay rise and make up my own title!
