So yeah these people they bought a bed ..it has drawers under it...either side...it is a double bed.
But ...having seen poor quality workmanship, I feel the mechanism may give way sometime. Frequent pulling and pushing may lead to chipping of the plywood. Moreover, it restricts the usage......you obviously cannot store heavy tools there...nor voluminous stuff else there is danger of the thing getting stuck while drawing out. So no place for comforters?
I prefer to keep it open under the bed...it doesn't mean I don't have anything under it...I do...but at least I can clean it, and keep heavy things too....since it will be on floor. Naturally the cover ensures the things are not visible.
For those bedspreads etc. another box in front...or cupboards.

Underbed draws are not meant for you to store tools its for bedsheets, or close. I had a day bed with draws under it and thats what I choice at 18 because I had a lot of soccer stuff. I would put in one draw my soccer shorts in another my socks, and in the last drew I put in my bras and panties. The wood was decent it last many years. My daughter had it for 10 years of her life before she asked for a lofted bed to make more room in her room.
My boys have drawers in their bunkbed on their stairs. They use it for things like socks, there boxers, one use it for dress up clothes and the other draw is scouting clothes.
My husband and I have a bed that lifts so we are trying to get those plastic containers to put under it since it has a lot of space under the bed for us to places or sheets. Not the comforter but this would allow us more space in our closet which is very small for 2 adults to share.

@ShyBear88 I hope you didn't put used socks in the drawer closest to the head of the bed...

@vandana7 I have hallways closet and store them on the top shelf where the kids can't get them. More are in the basement in the laundry room. US house are built different, and most people have a store place like a room, or attic, or basement where they store not ever day stuff which tools are not an ever day thing.

But ... does it not get spoiled if you don't use it frequently...and if you use it frequently will the mechanism give way, will the plywood start coming off? I would keep the same thing with cabinet like closure and magnets...to hold the flaps. No drawer. The cabinet closure would hide from view the really unwanted things. If necessary one side drawers and one side cabinet perhaps...

@JudyEv The other reason you all require decent storage specifically for the purpose is............. you all are inclined to be DIY folks. We get laborers. Carpenters, plumbers, electricians, painters. You all, on the other hand, try to do much of it by yourselves. Naturally, you all may have more tools too.
Whatever tools and things that I don't regularly use go under the bed. I feel comfortable at the thought that I can pull them out easily when I need, or plan to clean under the bed. We have plenty of dust, and the gap between the bed and that shelf is definitely insufficient for vacuum to go inside, right? Yes, heavy things land there...pulling them out is admittedly not easy. But I also don't need them as often.

I have seen those beds. :) Quite comfortable I must say. :)
I was thinking about the storage at your end and in the US and other European countries. You all require more storage because you all have business area separated from residential area. Right? This means, if you require anything suddenly, you would have to travel up and down business districts. Time consuming as well as expensive. So you all prefer to have everything up in attics or wherever. We don't normally have attics. Most of our storage is in cupboards...we just have to walk across to shops because shops are not too far from our homes.

@vandana7 Most houses here are one storey or they used to be. Not too many have attics. Our storage is in cupboards too although this room has a 'storeroom' where we store things. We do have to drive to the shops but soon there will be a supermarket within walking distance.

Captain's beds (that's what they're called) are practical in small rooms.

I suspect it isn't even plywood - more likely pressed wood with a vinyl veneer - looks nice when new but really doesn't hold up,
My husband makes a lot of our furniture and he insists on solid wood, and even picks over the boards to be sure the quality is as high as possible.

Exactly....wood will hold provided it is good quality and termite and moisture proof wood...teak preferably. If teak is used ..it would feel..why hide it...LOL...it looks great as a bench box...not being able to clean under it makes me nervous. If there are pests, I would have tough time.

My first wife loved those under-bed drawers. She filled them with pillow cases and sheet sets. But we also had a huge mirrored dresser that matched the headboard of the bed. (She had one drawer under the bed filled with medication bottles... I have no idea why she put them down there. She was odd in a lot of ways.) Comforters went on shelves in our walk-in clothes closet. Shoes also went into the closet.
I still prefer clothes and shoes in my bedroom closet. Pretty leaves her clean clothes in a chair in her bedroom with shoes scattered around her bedroom. I won't let her leave shoes in the living room. Sometimes I have to holler at her and remind her to put shoes into her bedroom.

Usually those drawers are used for bed sheets, blankets, etc. or clothing.

I have a bad drawer but I am very gentle with it; looking out at my floor too.
