Our Bit of Snow

This was the unbelievable scene of snow in our local hills yesterday!
We never get snow out our way - not in this Valley - or at least it's been quite a long time. In my childhood, those same hills did get snow topped when heavy rains fell. No one ever believed me until now!
Back in the days, there were no houses up there. Now there are many new upscale housing communities in the hills. Families were posting Facebook photos of white winter in their yards . . . they are only a mere 15 minute drive away from us.
So maybe we'll take a drive up there later. I hope we don't get caught in a snow storm
.
Are you experiencing unusual weather? Did you get your bit of snow this winter?

We've had several snows this winter and expect at least one heavy snow before Summer gets here. We've had snow in April before...
We had nasty storms last night but at 50F, it was way too warm for snow. This is tornado season and the tornado alarms went off four times in our city during the night. As far as I know, none touched down, though.

I know you guys get snow . . . but wow, that's nuts that it could snow in April!
Ohhhh, hope you and Pretty stay safe from the tornadoes! I didn't even realize there were tornado alarms til recently . . . the only sirens I heard were in my childhood - those air raid sirens.
We're raining again today. I remember it being this way in my childhood, but for recent years this is so bizarre. We are actually cold. And obviously cold enough to get some snow in the hills. Boy, I can't wait to see how summer gets

@DaddyEvil Yah, there were some super hot days last summer. It's to be expected here, but I don't know about this year. However, now, the warmer part of the days have become nearly hot . . . though for March the mornings and nights are still crazy cold. There was frost on the roofs here this morning.
I think the air raid sirens were from war times maybe? Maybe because we're in a coastal state? I don't know . . . they don't go off anymore, but we still see some of them standing here and there.
I have always wondered why tornadoes don't rip through cities. It's often where there's huge open space, isn't it? Oh geez, politics in that too, eh? That really sucks that those who really need the money don't ever get it
.
That'd be great if summer were mild. I did hear on the radio that next year is expected to have the highest temps on record

I hope nobody gets as much heat as we did this last Summer! We were breaking records for heat here!
I've never heard an air raid siren... Different areas, I guess.... Tornado sirens go off a lot here but we ignore them since tornadoes go around our city. The farms outside of the city get hit but no tornado has hit in the city ever, as far as I know. (There are places online that say the city gets hit by tornadoes all the time but it's make believe by the city officials. They're just pocketing money from the Federal Government for all the "damages" that happen out in the countryside... I feel sorry for the farmers and home owners out there. I'm positive they never get any of the disaster relief money that's sent here.)
I'm hoping for a mild Summer this year.

@LadyDuck Has it changed in the past few days (sorry I'm always so late with replies!!)? Here we had some warm moments, but now we're back to rain today. It's still cold but perhaps not as cold as it had been in the past month. It seems like earth, whether we're talking about climate change or Covid, has indeed gone downhill thanks to humans . . . it has all come to this

@much2say We had a too warm winter. We had a lot of rain the year Covid started, with landslides and flooding. Last year no rain, this year has started also with no rain. The earth is sick because of everything wrong the humans have done the past 2 centuries.

I can see snow from my backyard! It's still far ways to go but, it's so pretty from afar. The weather is definitely odd!

@infatuatedbby Yah, the photos don't seem to be good as what you see with your own eyes
. Lucky you have that neat window nook
. . . we see our neighbor's house side from our kitchen window and the view is the same everyday
.
Can't believe people are still dealing with crazy snow!!

There seems to be very strange weather conditions all over the world! Ah, so you have had snow there before. I have seen black and white photos of snow here from 1949 . . . apparently it snowed for 3 days straight. It is such an excitement to see white fall from the sky. Interestingly, a few days ago it did snow for a bit . . . but I missed it as I was in another town . .. and my kids missed it because they were in their classes. Of course it melted in a matter of minutes.

@changjiangzhibin89 Wowwwww, so you actually had a snow filled childhood in winter
! Now I understand you truly meant it when expressing it was like meeting a friend after a long separation!
When was the last time you saw icicles? I have never seen icicles form on our roofs - and certainly have never made a snowman in our own yard. We always had to drive far to go see any snow.

I do remember it kinda snowing when I was a teen maybe . . . but it didn't last very long - all melted quickly.
In 1949, it snowed here for 3 days
. There is photo evidence of it - I see black and whites of our snow covered Valley on FB . . . very weird but cool!
Snow probably won't get to our area/house, but we did get hail 3 times in a day which hasn't happened in a long time too. That was as close to snow as we're gonna get (um, I hope). It started raining again but not as badly as the weekend. How goes it over there today?

@sallypup How are you liking it on the west side? Rain is certainly easier to deal with than snow (all I know is rain . . . and in recent years we've barely had any rain til now). We had some warmer days last week . . . and now we're back to rain today

@much2say Your part of the world is for sure having strange weather. I used to live on the east side of my state. That is totally different than where I am now- West side. It snows there and it rains here. I think maybe the nights have been pretty mild but this is just the start of my second winter here.

It's very, very rare that it happens - our area barely even gets rain (but we sure got it this season). The other day we did get some snow here - unbelievable - though I missed it. It melted quickly. You never know . . . it could one day snow over there too!

I'm not sure if the area in the photo counts as the Santa Susana Mountains . . . but it is the hills of Porter Ranch. It all melted quickly though. But in the distance we can see the San Gabriel Mountains which is still very snowy - quite spectacular if you view it from good spot!

It's very strange seeing pictures of snow in California. Did you take the drive to see yhe snow?
We got our first snowfall this winter but it wasn't much compared to what we usually get every winter.

We should have taken advantage that day to try to hike there (hills in the photo), but we didn't have a chance to . . . all melted by the next day. There were other local areas that did snow . . . and the other day it snowed here (but I guess I missed it as I was in the next county
). Snow in our Valley is extremely rare.
And interesting how certain places like yours have less snow. Strange, strange weather!!!!

I thought of you and hoped you didn't get any of that blizzard. That storm made National News!!!!! If you drove there, hope you have 4 wheel drive or is that unheard of in your neck of the woods?
CT had its first measurable snow today - 3 to 4 inches.

Our area didn't get a blizzard - not even close. But we did have heavy rains and a few occasions of hail. The other day it actually snowed here but I completely missed it because I was in the next county (sunny, no sign of even rain). I'm sure lots of people have 4 wheel drive here . . . folks want to have their vehicles with the works for their trips
. But we didn't drive to the place in the photo . . . we tried the next day but of course by then it was all melted.

Can you imagine if one day it does snow out your way? There have been local reports of snow this week . . . even we got it, but I missed it as I was in another area - and the kids were stuck in their classrooms. It is a very rare weather event.

Just some haze in the sky this afternoon. Otherwise other than the cloudy skies that prevent extreme heat in late February, the weather has been average.

@much2say My area in Southwest Louisiana is in the path of tornadoes even though it is rare for a tornado to hit Lake Charles compared to cities in the middle or east of the state.

Since this post, I know some other locals got snow. Even we did too, but I missed it - and so did the kids who were in class at the time. So strange seeing the white stuff around here . . . I'm sure it was that way for your Ventura friend too!2 people like this

@spiderdust So pretty . . . but so funny with the snow in the background with palm trees in the foreground (that's CA for ya!). From certain spots, it looks like that from here to . . . kinda like being on another planet since we rarely see this kind of scenery!

@much2say It's still strange seeing so much snow on the mountains/hills near us.
This isn't my photo, but one that someone recently posted on the r/SanJose subreddit. These are the foothills in the east of San Jose.

Oh yah . . . but I wish we thought to actually go there at the time. By the next day it was pretty much melted. However we got snow this week . . . but I wasn't around and the kids missed it too because they were in their classrooms. Only for a few short minutes - I'm sure that melted real quick too.

@much2say thanks much 2 say. The norwester in bengali is called kalbaisakhi. Baisakh is the month of April. The heat of the Bay of Bengal leads to formation of dark clouds and thunder storm in the form of norwester or Kalbaisakhi.
