Rough Day Here

WHAS weather coverage.

Louisville set a couple of records today. We had the lowest barometric pressure ever recorded here, and the highest wind gust ever. We had the remnants of Hurricane Ike go through here, and this storm beat what it did! When it was over, nearly 200,000 customers statewide were without electricity. I am one of them. But my house is fine, which is something a lot of people can’t say. My uncle down in the “country” had a barn badly damaged and some siding damaged on his house. I heard from @LouAvul on the other side of town, and she’s okay as well. She did say there was roof damage at her condo, though. There was one fatality in the western part of the state. All in all, it was a very rough day here. I am so thankful that we have the science of meteorology that can forecast these in advance.

Kinda cold in the house, so I’m getting the heck out of Dodge.

@1creekgirl — there are huge parts of town with electricity. Unfortunately the hotels have invested in price gouging, so I’m 50 miles north for $90 instead of $270.

Too cold to stay home. I’m at a hotel about 50 miles north of town, staying warm and charging everything.

@RasmaSandra — I’m definitely blessed that I don’t have to stay in a cold house with no electricity.

Ditto! The fatality count is up to four now. There’s a house not too far from me that got taken out by a falling tree.

@DWDavis — thankfully that was NOT one of the fatalities. We didn’t have any in Louisville at last report.

I lost about $40 in food because the fridge had no power. Infinitely better than that house a few blocks away with a huge tree through it.

@LindaOHio the power company apparently learned from Ike and the ice storm. Ours came back on in less than 48 hours. Thank God!

Not a typical day for those TV Meteorologists. They earned their pay on that day. Glad you were able to ride out the storm with little damage. Gotta like the big hair, lol

There’s some nasty things around town (trees on houses) but I’ll take the inconvenience of no power and losing $40 in food out of the fridge over that!

Those were not good records to beat. I am glad you are fine and I agree that we are lucky that the science can forecast those in advance. Is everything fine for you there?

@FourWalls - That was surely money well spent. Several years ago we called the municipality because some trees looked in bad shape. They took are to take those trees down and they were all empty inside. In case of high winds they would have fell on our fence for sure.

I’m glad to hear you’re okay Karen. I can’t believe how bad those winds were. It was bad in Gainesville as well, with 50 mph gusts. And we were only on the tail end of that bad storm system. Yesterday was a travel day for me, I took off for West Palm Beach, and thankfully the winds weren’t bad at all by the time I got to south Florida.

I’m fine and sitting with electricity, heat, and real food in Chuy’s in Indiana. I had to drop some stuff off for my brother. He doesn’t have power, either.

I do hope your power won't be off for too long. That's sad about the fatality. Sometimes it seems a wonder that more aren't killed.

There are four deaths blamed on weather as of this morning. There were two in Tennessee, both caused by falling trees.

@FourWalls We had a tree fall quite near us in a paddock one day. They come down quite silently until they hit the ground,

We had thunder and lightning and hail and rain during a snowstorm last night. And now the sun is shining and melting some of it.

God did indeed protect me. My neighbor and I went halfsies on the cost of having a tree removed from our neighbor’s yard two years ago, and that turned out to be the best investment we made!!! That tree would definitely have come down yesterday.
