Do Men Still Wear Ties Anywhere?

On my first job in a grocery store, age 14 (Texas) males had to wear white shirts & ties. On to California, age 16 another grocery job, had to wear a tie, sold women's shoes in southern California, age 19 or 20, ties & suit coats! I spent the rest of my working life in offices and up to a few years ago ties were required there too. So, I bought a truckload of ties over the years, nice silk ties at that. They were not cheap. A few years ago, I donated quite a few, gave some to my wife to use the fabric in her art quilts, and I still have a lot of ties. I think I'll keep my two Snoopy Santa ties, one more Snoopy tie and my St. Patrick's day tie with the shamrocks and donate the rest. I don't go to chuch, don't even know if ties are still worn there, so I will never need all these ties again. Does your husband, father or SO have ties?

My dearest hates ties and refuses to get near one. My Dad was a cowboy. Maybe a Western string tie for him but I don't remember hm having one. My Uncle Dan made string ties from agates that he found in Montana rivers.

I'll keep a very few that I do like a lot and maybe want to add character to whatever I wear.

@JamesHxstatic - Many worked at home during the pandemic, but now almost all are back to their offices. All public employees have to wear a tie and also all the bank employees here.

@LadyDuck I figured things were much more formal there. At my bank there are no ties, nor with public employees. Many people are still working from home.

I'm not surprised to hear that @LadyDuck. I suspect Switzerland is still a lot more formal than the US has become. Did many people work at home during the Pandemic? Have they gone back to the office mostly these days?

In the US, most offices had become more casual, then the Pandemic came and many people were working at home. Now there seems to be a casual atmosphere with many people at the office only one to three days a week. My daughter seldom goes to her office. Did many work at home where you live?

Men just don't wear ties much anymore. I personally always thought they were really a stupid invention--oh, they look nice when a fellow is all spiffed up for a wedding or whatever. I am tired of formality. Ties are not comfortable looking, so I can understand why men would not like to wear them.

My hubby has one or two. I have not seen him in one since the day we got married, twenty five years ago. I saw kid in a suit and tie today--third grade or so. Not sure what the deal was.

I'll bet that kid felt all grown up. In the US, ties seem pretty useless anymore.

Certain jobs like newscasters, politicians, some businessmen etc. wear them...but by and large I think they are extinct.

They still wear them just not in the same area and not as often. Sounds like you are saving the better ones.

@JamesHxstatic It will be a necessity if a mention is made about it in the invitation I guess.

When my husband worked as a manager in a grocery store, he wore a tie. It was part of the dress code for management. That was many years ago when he worked there.

My boyfriend doesn't wear ties. My uncle, though, was a principal of an elementary school and he also played the organ at two churches. He wore ties. I still have some of his ties. Ones that were my favorite.

Yes, my husband has a lot of ties. He has not used them for ages. I think it is out of fashion nowadays.

I guess I have been fortunate to never have any job that ever required them. Besides, I hate wearing them and the only tie I own, which I avoid using at all costs, is a clip on.

What's a tie??? I have 10 of those long-hanging things and haven't worn one since 1979!! Why haven't thrown them out?? Heck in the 1970s they were VERY ($20???) expensive Countess Mara ties!

My husband was mostly at home working on the laptop in Latvia and very rarely when we went out would he wear a tie, Only when it was something special, In the 1960s when I was a child my dad almost always wore a tie except of course when at home or out casual,

Yes he has some, but hates wearing them. I quite like ties! I have worked in a couple of places where a tie was part of the uniform for everyone (men and women). Also in some places where they give out ties to the men if they haven't worn one. The only thing I don't like about them is that they can dangle into food etc.

My dad wore ties most of the time when he was teaching. He was an English Professor at UC Berkeley and later at University of Chicago. When I followed in his footsteps (more or less) and became a Psychology Professor, I rarely if ever wore ties. But I did and do wear blue or "university stripe" button down shirts most of the time when I'm teaching at that level. At Guitar Center, I wear my Guitar Center black "clown shirt." With the littlies, I whatever I don't mind getting snot, tears and drool on.
