This time of year many are thinking of losing weight, changing diets, and looking for different foods to eat. Many dieters will shy away from carbs because carbs are seen as being the culprit in weight going up instead of down. But, doing away with carbs or eating the wrong ones can mean you may be robbing yourself of important nutrients. Here are a few ideas on making better carb choices: What about eating better carbs? Salmon, avocadoes, eggs, oatmeal, nuts, and seeds are some good choices. Potatoes, which are high in fiber, and are quite filling is a good choice. They are a good choice but, too many eat them fried in oil and drowned in salt. Or even in chip form. Try them baked with a little olive oil and sprinkled with herbs. Carbs come with fiber with is not digestible yet it is important in our digestion. It has been shown in studies that soluble fiber is very useful in reducing high cholesterol levels and losing weight. Don't drink your carbs. Eating our fruit raw keeps the antioxidants and nutrients in tact whereas drinking them in a smoothie can reduce the nutrient content in the juicing process. Of course, how you eat these carbs is very important. But, also the amount, or portions, should be kept in check. Instead of eating on a large plate change to a smaller one and then the smaller portion won't be so hard to take. As a final note- Eating fibrous foods will help to clear out the bowel and drinking more water will wash any oxidants and bad foods out of the system. These two acts will cause some weight loss.

I tried giving up carbs a few times, and it only worked for me once. I’ve been on Weight Watchers for 15 months now and have lost 41 pounds. Smart food choices! That’s the way to go!!

I find it interesting, that when my doctor claimed I was diabetic, she simply said watch how many carbs I was taking in. Not to quit carbs alltogether. Interestingly, while I am trying to count carbs... I know 'no carb' is impossible as they are in virtually everything you eat.

@celticeagle Yeah. I know. I talk to her regurally. I can understand the struggle. A lot of our favorite foods are no go foods. But, you know what? I've also learned, to eat what I want. By denying myself, it only makes me crave it more, and it can cause problems along the way.

@kaylachan Carbs are fuel. A doctor shouldn't say generically 'carbs'. Processed food is the devil more than carbs like brown rice or a banana.

I will never give up carbs, I tried a no carb diet years ago and this is something I regretted. Smaller portions is the way to go.

Anna, I won't give them up, either. I just limit them to a small amount and that works for me.

I think everyone's body and metabolism is different so there is no one-size-fits-all. I know that I do better when I limit carbs if I am trying to lose weight. Others need the carbs for energy. I don't drink sugary sodas or juices. I don't eat sweets as a general rule. I try to incorporate fruit and vegetables each day. I have had some health and digestive issues over the past couple of years so I've gotten more lax about what I will eat on any given day. I have been eating more carbs and the scale shows it. I'm just happy that I can fit in the same size pants.

This is true. I love sweets! I dislike most vegetables. I've been having some digestive issues recently but, I know my body and was able to nip it in the bud. I you can still fit into the same size pants you are doing it right.

Didn't know salmon had carbs? The kind I eat has none... Eggs are very small in carbs...so eggs and salmon would be a perfect meal. I don't eat much fiber myself...but I don't see that ever changing lol

@MommyOfEli2013 .........It just seems that if you are struggling to lose you would take every advantage you can. But, that's your war not mine.

@celticeagle Why is that a shame? Those who eat carnivore don't get fiber....
