You will Never Believe It

The internet has been wonky for a while now. I kept thinking it was a problem with Microsoft wanting me to install Windows 11 or some confusion between Edge and Google Chrome. You will never believe what the trouble was. One of the cats chewed the internet cord in two. Several bite marks decorated the cord and one place was completely separated. I suspected the white cat, Bowie. I took him there and asked him if he did that and he ran. He had nothing to say in his defense and the other kitties looked ready to testify against him. In a more disturbing turn, we found some electric cords also chewed through. We are so lucky that they were not connected. Now, we have to get more cord and hook it up. More expense that we don't need. Thank God for wifi. Did your cat ever chew the wires up? I know that puppies do that sort of thing but never thought kitties would. Is there a way to stop them chewing up dangerous cords? What do you think?

I've never had inside cats or dogs so they never got a chance to chew through wires at my houses... There are wraps you can buy that hide the cords but I'm not sure those would stop a pet from chewing through them. I hope you can find something that will stop that. You could have ended up with flash fried kitty and a burning house.

@akalinus I hope you never see them in real life, either.

@DaddyEvil I have never wanted to see a fried cat. I was in a house that caught fire. Someone next door torched the house that was being remodeled. The wind carried the fire to our house at four in the morning. It was 10 degrees out three days before Christmas. I had to get all five kids out. It was not a fun morning and I never want to repeat anything like that ever again.

Cats have owned me for 55 years, so there may have been one or two throughout the years, but I cannot remember. In his 8 years of life so far, Henry has been good about every cord, except the pull cord alarm in my bedroom. While playing with it, he accidentally pulled and set off the alarm at 4:00 A.M. The problem, though, was that the fire department had disconnected our complex's pull cord alarm from their base years before I moved in, so since it did not ring at the firehouse (and none of us knew we could turn it off ourselves), my alarm rang for four hours until the maintenance man came in. I think the only way to block the cords is with cord hiders, and blocking any means for the cats to get behind those electronics and appliances.

Wow, that is a morning you will remember for a while. It must have scared you. Tell your cats not to play in your room until you wake up. I'm kidding. You can't make a cat do anything.

@Chellezhere Was Henry trying to warn you about something? Your neighbor probably thought there was a fire or something and wanted to rouse you. He was just being a good neighbor even if it turned embarrassing.

@akalinus I was and was not confused. When my neighbor awakened me (by banging on my door), I remembered Henry awakening me in the night and shooing him away, so I knew the cause. It was more embarrassing than anything else. In my current apartment, the pull string is away from the bed, so I can more easily block his access to it.

I've been lucky so far but a friend of mine had a similar problem with her dogs. I think she began using some kind of foul tasting substance to make them leave the cords alone.

I think I will try that. He can't be chewing through cords. He might get a charge out of it.

I never had cats that chewed up wires but at least you found the problem. Hope you can find a way to keep them from chewing up more wires/cords. That sounds like it could be dangerous

It could be life-ending for the cat or it could have serious injuries. It could start a fire. The cats have a cat tree to play on and they have plenty of toys to amuse themselves with. I don't know why Bowie chews on cords. I am scared hor him and for us.

@akalinus LOL! Henry has a 7-FT tall cat tree, many toys and a scratching post. I suppose, because they are his, is the why he attempts to scratch the wall-to-wall carpet and my couch instead, but... I can't blame you for being frightened by Bowie chewing on the cord. I hope you can remedy the problem tout de suite.

@Chellezhere It sounds like Henry should be very happy with his collection of cat things. Why the carpet and couch? I hope Henry does not get into cords. The cats are shredding two chairs in the living room. They have scratching posts and something angled on the floor to scratch on. Why do they want to ruin the chairs? I don't know when we can get new internet cord but I'll be checking around.

Yes. We adopted a handsome Siamese from the animal shelter. Wasn't long until I caught him chewing the laptop's cord and the DVD's power cord. We still have that jury rigged DVD power cord. Cats can be quite ambitious.

Our dogs never chewed any cords. You can spray a deterrent spray on the cords. It tastes bad; and they shouldn't mess with them. Make sure it's especially made for pets.

We will look into this. We can't have animals chewing cords. It could be an electrifying experience.

@LindaOHio We just caught him messing with a different cord yesterday. I will suggest that they buy something that repels the cats away from the cords.

@akalinus Yes. The animal could be harmed or it could possibly start a fire.

No experience with the pets. I think it's a constant headache if the pets keep on doing this. May be give them something dummy to chew so that they don't come close to the cables. Else it would be a constant task for you.

This has never happened before. I did not know that cats chewed wires. I hope these wires also come as cables so that he can't chew through them. I have to check on that.

I never kept a cat as a pet. You can always hook the wires/cables on the walls or hide them under the furniture.

Maybe you can get a cat sometime. They can be a lot of fun and comfort at times. Sometimes they are naughty but you can love that out of them, hopefully.

Do you have a cat or a puppy? Bowie is a cat. He is the most adventuresome of them all and if he was in a jungle or living outside, he would be an alpha male. He is a leader for sure.
