Backing Into Parking Spaces

I see a lot of people who back into parking spaces, and I never quite understand the purpose for this. Perhaps it is to save time? It can't be that, because it takes longer to manuever backing INTO the space than it takes to back OUT of the space if you parked in the space forward in.
It can't be for safety purposes, because you are more likely to hit something backing in than backing out too.
Do you back into a parking space or just go in forward, and if you are one of the ones who tends to back in, why do you do it?

I back in, for a number of reasons. Mainly, I have arthritis and it hurts to sit for a long period of time looking back to see if it’s clear. It is also much easier to back in than out. I’ve had accidents (fender bender, my car insurance didn’t go up because of it) backing out but never backing in/pulling out.

@porwest — yes, but there’s no traffic in that parking spot.
PS: be weather aware today (4/5/23).

@FourWalls I always tell my wife that's what ears, mirrors and eyeballs are for.
Yes, very crappy weather today. At least the rain has stopped for a bit right now.

They do that because they want a quick getaway

@RebeccasFarm It would be a great way to do it if I ever want to rob a bank. But of course, use someone else's car too. lol

I do back into spaces sometimes depending on how crowded/busy the parking lot is. I will take the extra few seconds to back in so I have less chance of backing out in front of someone when I'm ready to leave.

@porwest I've never backed into anyone yet, either. But we have had idiot drivers back into us in a crowded parking lot. I swear they never look behind them when they start backing up even thought I started honking the horn as soon as I saw them coming at me.

@DaddyEvil Some people are just oblivious to the fact that there are other people on the planet besides them. lol

I guess at the end of the day it is a free country and people can do what they want. I just happen to be one of those people that thinks no matter what, you are backing up in or out and if backing itself is more dangerous than going forward, you're not saving the safety of anything or anyone. lol
Perhaps I am just dumb and don't know any better. But at the same time I have never backed into anyone or anything...yet. lol

My friend backs in. She uses the backup camera to make certain she's straight. I don't have one of those backup cameras. I park forward. I have trouble parking straight. It takes me several tries before I'm satisfied I parked straight enough and left enough room on both sides for the cars beside me.

I have come to really love the backup camera. I can see what's behind me as well as a few feet on both sides. I can see exactly where I am and it tells me where to go. Not that I can't back well enough on my own. But the white line is where I am heading, and the green line is where I am at. It helps.

I guess people wanna leave quickly from wherever they are. But perhaps when pulling out of a spot it is easier to notice incoming cars or people if you go forward.
What I don’t get is why some people try to squeeze into a spot between two cars when there are plenty of free spots elsewhere with no cars. Hubby tends to do that.

@porwest some people MUST park as close to the entrance as they can get. Sometimes there’s ample parking farther away and yet they will wait it out till a spot close to the entrance opens up.

@lovebuglena Isn't that what handicapped spots are for? But of course you have to have a placard.

In some of my defensive driving classes we were taught that if you can back in it is safer as you are less likely to hit a child etc. pulling forward out of the space. Often when you are backing in it is into an area like you have in the picture. Nothing to hit behind. You have to judge the situation for yourself, though. Hubby almost always backs in.

I would prefer doing the hard way first and then doing the easier way later. So, I would back into the parking space and go forward and drive out., It's more dangerous to be backing into oncoming traffic or into a road because of incoming or outgoing vehicles.

there are several reasons, first I drive a 15 passenger van, I back in because I know what is there right this second. If I am backing out of the spot, too many things can get behind me that I can't see, kids, animals, even cars. Another thing is, depending on the spot I am in, I have had many many people decide they should pull up to my bumper. therefore, I can't open the back doors to get my groceries into the back. It never fails, if they can block my back doors, they do.They actually teach you in safety driving to back out, it is safer. It's easier to see in front of you than behind.

@porwest The parking on my bumper, to the point I can't open the doors always bothers me, I guess because I do take the time to think of others most days. It just seems to be a jerk move to me, I mean what's the point of getting that close to somebody's vehicle??

@mom210 I definitely can understand. But I do wonder, is the person doing it in their parking space? I am picturing someone backing into a space that backs up to another space. People SHOULD be considerate, but then again, a lot of the time I find that sometimes "being considerate" is a matter of perspective. Just my two cents.

I no longer drive but when I did I pulled into parking spaces forwards and backed into spaces along sidewalks,

I drive a big F-150, and I always back into parking spaces. I don’t know why, I just find it really easy to do. Which then makes it easier and more convenient when I leave.

@porwest I used to always back my F150 into parking spaces, but I don't anymore. And the weird thing is, I don't remember why or when I stopped backing into spaces.

@moffittjc lol. Might be old age. At least you still remember where you parked, right?

The one area where it can be problematic is when someone backs into an opposing space. I had one woman yell at me once because she backed in and I was across from her on the other side and pulled in forward. "How am I supposed to get in my trunk?"
I gave her a look and told her, "Learn how to park a car the right way in."
She called me a few names. I laughed at her. We went our separate ways. No shots were fired.

Are you kidding, I can barely drive straight in! I hate backing up.

lol. This would be a good reason to avoid backing whenever possible. I laugh at some people who drive compact cars who come wide out of a parking space and are clearly having trouble navigating. Usually, I will say under my breath, "She must think she's driving a tank, or something."

It's much easier to pull out when you can see oncoming traffic. Too many times there are vans or trucks blocking your view. I pull into a spot though. I don't drive enough these days to back in with confidence.
