The doctor (actually a nurse practitioner) looked in my ears, my throat, felt of the very mild swelling that remains. I was offered the choice of more antibiotics of a different type or a scan (CT or x ray or something) and chose the medicine. The practitioner said I likely was not on antibiotics long enough to completely clear the infection. She also has me taking extra flonase while still not well. In two weeks I am to call the office and tell them if I am better or not. I often have problems from spring allergies. She agrees that it does not present in the same way cancer does. My younger sister had cancer in these salivary glands. We ate out in Hutchinson, then drove home by way of Newton, because I needed to pick up a new prescription. I am sleepy, so must get ready for bed. Full day tomorrow.

You don't have problems with Flonase? It kept giving me a bloody nose when I used it.

I do not, but I have heard that other people do.. There are some similar meds that might work for you. Bob used to have nose bleeds all the time. Using a regular saline spray helped that immensely.

@GardenGerty I tend to have nosebleeds more when my allergies are acting up although I haven't had any since the pollen has gotten so high this year. It may be helping that I wear a mask if I go outside now. I haven't had a cold since we started wearing the masks, either. The allergy doctor told me not to use Flonase any more and prescribed Ipratropium Bromide nasal spray. I can use it one day and it works very well but if I use it two days in a row, it causes rebound... The allergist told me to alternate the nasal spray he prescribed with Afrin Nasal Spray. (Afrin is what I was using before my regular doctor prescribed Flonase.)

@DaddyEvil I had an adult disabled client who took several allergy treatments and had the Ipratropium as a breathing treatment in a nebulizer.

I think the combination of the new antibiotic and the use of some extra sinus medicine will eventually do the trick.

Me too. I feel dizzy a lot since this infection started. Not the dizzy that spins you round and round but more the kind that make you feel all tilted like this /. Not pleasant. She said that is probably from the fluids in my ear.

Is a nurse nonpracticing allowed to prescribe antibiotics? It is so strict here.

She is an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner and works under the supervision of a doctor or doctors, in this case Ear Nose and Throat specialists. This kind of nurse can prescribe. I am not sure if she can prescribe opiates or narcotics , but the doctors sign off on her work.

@GardenGerty Only doctors can prescribe medications here, never a nurse, even if advanced registered. The doctor is the only one who can prescribe medications. I had to wait to see my doctor when my husband needed a strong pain reliever.

It's very likely you weren't on antibiotics long enough: infections are getting harder to kill off after only a week's worth of antibiotics. A friend of mine who is prone to bladder infections always has to ask for an extended course.

The ones they gave methe first time are a newer type of antibiotics and from what I read they are being over prescribed because they generally work so well. This second round is an older type, but it has been years since I have had it. It should do the trick.
