Moments before tragedy struck for my friend's daughter.

My music buddy Michael recently went to New Orleans to visit his daughter. While there, they went on one of those bayou tours. There were alligators everywhere. Michael took this photo moments before: a) the alligator brutally attacked them, robbing his daughter of her left arm --or-- b) they strolled off of the bridge and climbed back into the boat. You decide. Michael told me that the guides there are "friends" with the alligators and feed them chicken as they drive those boats with the big fans in the back through the bayou. Maybe some day I'll take one of those tours. But I may wait until I've recorded a few more guitar videos. I like my arms. Have you ever seen a real alligator or crocodile? I have not.

Being a frequent NOLA visitor, I'm going to go with my redneck roots and say they were both find and left the area. I wouldn't mess with an alligator although from everyone I know that's had some alligator they make good eating along with frog legs. To answer the last question of course to both. I've even petted a baby one that had handlers, so I didn't get eaten.

I am contemplating the phrase "make good eating." Does that mean it doesn't hurt that much when they eat you?

@ShyBear88 For now I'll stick with black bears (not grizzlies). I have no experience with alligators.

Pretty and I have seen alligators and crocodiles in the local zoos. There was a thick wire fence between us and the animals. We could get quite close without being in danger.

@TheHorse It isn't safe to get "near" them in the wild if you and they are on dry land. They can run as fast as a horse.

I find it interesting that you can get near them "in the wild" and not be in danger. But I'd rather be with a tour guide who knows what he is doing.

I hear that the meat is good. I doubt I will ever take a tour down there. So much more to see in the South. I want to go to New Orleans again and take several tours. None of the swamps. I've never seen a real alligator or crocodile. They aren't on my Bucket List.

Mine either, actually. But I'd enjoy it if it happened.

Now that you mention it….. This was at Silver Springs during my winter vacation this year. Those people are not as close as they appear.

@TheHorse yes, the big ones. The babies are crazy wild since there are many of them in one place

Were they "relaxing"? That's all I've ever seen them do. At the zoo. But of course I did not jump in.

How terrible that she lost her arm! Not only disfiguring, and a terrible thing to go through, but the mental trauma had to be terrible as well.

@TheHorse I read it but thought I thought that she was grabbed from the boat, not sure why! Nice to know I was assuming the wrong outcome.

Is that what they're called? I remember a TV show that had those in it when I was a young child.

@TheHorse Was it Everglades! ? "In this syndicated series, Lincoln Vail was a local law enforcement official patrolling the wilderness area in his airboat. He had frequent dealings with the local Seminoles and worked diligently to protect the wildlife." It ran 1961-62, and yes, the exclamation mark was part of the title.

Only at the zoo. That's close enough for me. They strolled off the bridge

Actually, alligators can be reasonable animals depending on their mood so I am sure that the gator did not attack them, Only in zoos have I seen them.

When hubby and I visited New Orleans we went on one of those swamp tours. Oh Lordy. The man running the flat bottomed tour boat warned us to strictly keep our hands and arms IN the boat. He held pieces of hot dog out on a long stick and yup, a big gator leaped high in the air and nailed the hot dog. Snap. All arms and hands stayed in the boat.

I’ve taken those tours, but we weren’t allowed to get off the boat for safety reasons. Yes, I have seen real alligators there and elsewhere.

Makes sense (not getting off the boat). I don't make it to the South much these days.

Up north on the tourist boats, they would dangle a chicken some metres out of the water and the crocodiles would leap out of the water to get the bait. Probably they still do it.

I haven't seen one in real life thankfully...really would like to go on one of those tours though...they scare me to be honest as I don't believe they can be trained to any safe extent so they'll always be a threat to anything they think could be food.

I have seen a crocodile in the aprk and also in the river while I was a young girl we had gone swimming it was preparing to attack my cousin brother. Luckily I saw it and shouted to him to go to safety. We never went to that side of the river again

Absolutely. We've seen a lot of alligators on our trips to the Everglades and Florida Keys. I think they're cool. So ancient. Noticed that you changed your avatar. Who is that?
