Insect hotel - a fancy name for a bug house

Thanks to @DaddyEvil for the inspiration for this post. I mentioned insect hotels or bug houses on my post about nesting boxes for birds. Bug houses are man-made structures aimed at attracting insects and bugs that may be looking for a home. You can used wooden pallets, hollow pieces of wood of different sizes, straw, loose bark, even pieces of stone. You can also purchase a bug house if you don’t want to/can’t build your own. It's just another way we can give a helping hand to Mother Nature. Photos courtesy: Jirí Sedlácek, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons

Thank you for the mention. Uhm... why would someone purposely make a house for bugs?

@JudyEv Uh huh... and how do you know bad bugs won't take up residence in the bug house, though?

@DaddyEvil You don't. You just have to hope that the Housing Committee screen out the bad bugs.

There are plenty of good bugs around. They all need housing - just like people and birds! lol

That is an excellent idea. Many rely on marigolds to keep the mosquitos at bay, but this item would attract the bugs to one area of the yard.

@JudyEv I agree, there are many good insects. Mint is also another good plant to have around a garden if you have difficulty with rabbits coming to visit and munch. We have used that plant successfully in the past. We no longer have a vegetable garden to worry about.

Marigolds seem to be good at deterring quite a few pests. There are lots of 'good' insects about as well as bad ones.

That is something very interesting ! This particular one seems to be somewhere in Poland or the vicinity. Not sure if this is something that people make or buy somewhere nearby.

They would be easy to make really. You'd need a frame of some sort but everything else is just rubbishy stuff.

I have two of those insect houses in the Garden. One is for the bees and the other for the butterflies.

That's wonderful. What sort of house do the butterflies have? And is the bee house different to a bee-hive?

@JudyEv - The one on the left is a butterfly house and the one on the right a bee house.

@JudyEv More like the face you'd make if a bug decided to live in your nose.

The only tricky bit might be the frame but you could a large diameter pipe. They can be any shape and any size as long as there are 'bits' where insects can live. If you go to Wikimedia Commons and type in 'insect hotel' you will see dozens of different shapes and sizes.

You could poke bits of twig, bark, etc into a short length of pipe. The bugs don't expect anything fancy.
