The news just came down that Gordon Lightfoot passed away today.
There are no words. None to explain the beauty of the man’s music, or the joy it brought me through the years.
Thank you, Canada, for sharing one of your greatest native sons with the world.
And thank you, Gordon, for the music.
Lightfoot was 84.
A beautiful non-hit of his:

I was completely overwhelmed when I saw him and he sang “If You Could Read My Mind.” With all the concerts I’ve been to it only happened one other time, when I saw Loretta Lynn and she sang “Coal Miner’s Daughter.”

It’s on the Don Quixote album. I love the title track from that album, too.

Agreed. I think he knew, though, given the wording of that message that said he was canceling everything and couldn’t guarantee a reschedule…then asked for privacy.

@sallypup — he had that near-fatal aneurysm in the early 2000s and he looked 90 from that point on. I’m thankful we got him for an extra 20 years.

@FourWalls The last photos looked way older than mid 80's. Very frail. Poor fella.

The way commercial music sounds these days I wonder if we’ll have another commercially successful songwriter with the talent this man had in his toenail.

@FourWalls I doubt it. He was such a talent.

I figured something was very wrong when he canceled everything, said he didn’t know about rescheduling, and asked for privacy.

I hadn't seen your post before I posted about this. He had serious health issues for years.

Indeed. He had a near-fatal aneurysm in the early 2000s. I figured something serious was amiss when they announced he’d cancelled all concerts, gave no promise of rescheduling, and “asked for privacy.” That’s usually code (“respect privacy”) for something extremely serious.
Thank you (as a Canadian) for sharing him with us.

I never play “Christian Island” just once. It’s like a Lay’s potato chip.

@FourWalls I knew him from this song and the Edmund Fitzgerald. Sundown was always one of those songs that annoyed me b.c it would get stuck in my head. I'll never forget it was a Thursday night with "Incognito Bandito" (aka Toby Keith and studio musicians). I was taking the next day off but my then-husband didn't. I sent him video clips of that amazing concert and he eventually said he regretted not joining us.

Yes, heard this sad news. The Minstrel of Song has gone to his Carefree Highway in the sky. My favorite folk/pop recording artist of all time. RIP Gord, you provided me with many hours of your wonderful music!
And many more hours to come reminiscing and reflecting on your beautiful tunes for that I am sure...

I found his storytelling so deep. Loved him more as I got older. So thankful I got to see him live.

So many friends and acquaintances on Facebook are in mourning as well. This is a major chuck of the music soundtrack gone from a lot of lives.
