I just want to sleep, says this cow

We spent an hour or two at a Small Farm Field Day today and enjoyed seeing the different stalls and animals. One area was promoting the benefits of having a ‘house cow’. On the farm we always had at least one or two house cows which supplied us with milk and cream. Mum would sometimes make butter if there was a surplus of cream but we all preferred commercial butter. She also sold cream to friends in the nearby town. The Jersey cow in this pen just wanted to nap but the children were very keen to give her a pat.

She may be used to kids enough that she ignores them and keeps on sleeping, anyway. We always had one to three cows that we milked when I was a kid. As each of us boys reached 13, it became our early morning and afternoon chore to milk the cows... Sometimes mom sold gallons of milk to the neighbors or donated it to the church for special functions. We all churned butter from the cream in the evenings while we watched the television. (Mom put the cream into glass jars and gave us each a jar to shake. Mom watched the jars and told us when the butter was ready.)

Nice memories you have there. We had a wooden churn and mostly used that to make butter but sometimes we used egg-beaters till the cream started to 'turn' then used a wooden spoon.

@JudyEv Thanks. We didn't have a churn but mom loved homemade butter. Sometimes she'd have me keep shaking my jar of butter until it went back into the milk so she could drink buttermilk.

The cow seems not bothered anymore with the kids around and just continues with the nap. I guess they are really that used to being touched by people and is not afraid of them anymore.

It would be a boring day for them tied up in that pen.

My sister went to college with a girl whose family had a “house cow”. They’d drink their milk straight from the cow to the table. My sister couldn’t bring herself to do that.

I always wish to keep a cow as it has lots of benefits but here in the city, you are not allowed to keep them. Diary farms are banned in the city.

They wouldn't have a good life in a city. There would be all sorts of problems.

I am curious, whatever happens to the calves they have, do they simply grow up and are sold? I hope that doesn't sound like too stupid of a question.

@rebelann Ours did. So that they would produce well, they were very well fed and generally pampered.

If it's a heifer calf, then it might become a house-cow itself. The boy calves would probably be sold. Here is Bimbo, daughter of a house-cow and she went on to become one herself.

The kids must be enjoying patting the sleepy cow. Kids would find this exciting, especially if it's their first time seeing a cow.

There were a lot of different animals there that the children could interact with and pet. They were all having a great time.

This cow really seems to want to have a peaceful moment to nap. The little girl seems just to want to cuddle her.

The cow must have had enough of kids' pats. Nothing beats the milk and cream from house cows !At least, they contain no preservatives.

That's true about the preservatives. If we made butter we'd add a little bit of salt but mainly for the taste although salt is a preservative too.

Like cats, cattle must like to nap in the warmth of the sunlight, but the children didn't realize that. I have had milk from the barn but never had any homemade butter. I remember my grandparents speaking of churning butter themselves, but as children. I believe that they were happy to give up the homemade butter when they could buy it from someone else.
