Dogs that retrieve sticks

We had to take the caravan to a friend’s place for a small repair. He was looking after a dog for a friend. We hadn’t been there two minutes before the dog brought a stick for us to throw for him. If he brought it back and he thought you were taking too long to throw it, he would drop it right on your foot. When we went back next day, he went running around looking for a stick. He found a very short thin stick but then decided that wasn’t good enough. He then brought another thin one but this one was about a metre/yard long. After a few throws, it broke off to a better length. Dogs that retrieve sticks never seem to get enough of the game. I didn’t get a photo of him but I’ve put one up of Russell, a dog we looked after once. The ‘stick’ dog was similar in build to Russell.

@JudyEv That’s fun at first but it soon wears off!

It wears off for the thrower, that's for sure. A lot of people here have a stick affair which has a cup for a ball at one end. They can throw it a lot further with that and hopefully that would wear the dog out quicker. I don't think they'd made them for sticks yet.

It was funny to watch this one looking for something suitable then coming back with a huge long one.

@wolfgirl569 Possibly he has one, and maybe a ball, at his own home.

I threw it for what seemed ages and he developed just the hint of a limp so I called him over and gave him lots of pets while he got his breath back and had a bit of a rest. But he didn't want me to stop. lol

Luna has never been interested in retrieving sticks. Or balls.

@JudyEv Luna liked to play with balls when she was small. But she dis not retrieve them, she just held them in her mouth and changed it to a new place.

@marguicha At one place where we house-sat, one retrieved the ball, one bounced along behind the other two and the third one would chew it up. I was scared she'd swallow a piece of it so we stopped playing ball with them.

I wouldn't enjoy a dog dropping a stick on my feet.

I had sneakers on and it was a VERY light stick so it was okay. I like to think I made his day for a little while.

If it's a light stick, it's okay. Otherwise, it may hurt.

It was light I couldn't really feel it. I was talking for a minute and ignored him so he brought the stick closer to me.

Clever dog there. Preiti would pick up the ball and bring to the guests expecting them to throw it and she would run and pick it up and bring it back to the guest.

I love playing fetch with a dog. That is one of Ellie's favorite pass times. I also love it when a dog will play frisbee with you. That is fun.

Some of the dogs that play with frisbees are incredibly clever. This dog caught the stick in the air quite a few times.

That doggo and his drive to retrieve brings back years of memories with our dear Sally. Rufus is not a retriever unless he is super bored.

I tried to throw sticks with my dogs. They ignored them. However, I had better success with the tennis ball.

@JudyEv Mine sure did. I made the mistake of playing ball with Rascal in the house. He wouldn't play outside.

That is very interesting to know that a dog that belongs to a friend where you took your auto to be repaired retrieve sticks.

Not sure if the dog is trained or if he just easily trains all the people around him.

I should see one! I usually see pet dogs that retrieve balls. I seem to see dogs retrieving sticks mainly in movies.

Russell reminds me of Sheru, our grandparents dog. Even my dog, Topaz enjoyed fetching game. It was a routine for him to play fetching frisbee every evening. He would start getting excited around evening and get the frisbee to us.. It was too much of workout for us. We would be sweating soon.
