Do bad things taste good when on a diet?

So yesterday @TheSojourner did a discussion that mentioned cabbage soup. I thought it was an underrated soup until I really thought about it. The majority of the times I have had cabbage soup was when I was a teenager on that terrible “cabbage soup diet”. Perhaps I thought it was good because there weren’t a whole lot of choices. Which made me think of a story my dad told me, of an incident that happened a very long time ago. Both of my parents were trying to lose weight (although why my mom was I don’t know; she was always thin), and they were sticking to it rather well. My mom made a sugar free pie from her healthy recipe list, and they absolutely loved it. Having made such a hit dessert, my mom made an additional pie for a new member of their church. A couple of weeks later, my dad happened to ask the man if he had enjoyed the pie. The man answered honestly, “It was absolutely horrible. I’m sorry, but it was bad.” Surprised, but not offended, time moved on. About four months later, now off the diet, my mom made that pie again. One taste, and they both spit it out. It was horrible, and they both started laughing. I guess when you’re on a strict diet, anything can taste good when you’re deprived! Healthy dessert recipes have come a long way, including sugar substitutes since the 1980s. Do you have any stories you can relate? My mom was a great cook, who normally cooked healthy anyway, but this particular diet was VERY strict. I feel like I should defend her cooking honor.

I like cabbage! But I have never been on a true "diet."

I never liked cabbage unless it was Cole slaw, then PJ made me some cabbage on the grill with chicken and it was amazing. It's amazing how things can taste way different, like for me I stopped eating sugar and was out at the river one day with PJ and was hungry. The only thing we had was cupcakes, I took one bite and gave it to PJ because it tasted really bad.

@hillhjill I’m going to do that the next time I cook at my dad’s house. Thank you for the suggestion!

I have made healthy pumpkin pie recipes while dieting, and thought they tasted great. No one else thought so....

I've never made cabbage soup but I really like cooking cabbage with ground beef, ground pork or chicken chunks. I add lots of chopped onions to it, as well as garlic and spices. Yum! Real sugar desserts always taste good. I'm glad nobody ever forced me to eat sugar-free desserts.

@TheSojourner I still have some of it in the freezer. I always make too much so I can freeze some to eat later and don't have to cook as often.

@TheSojourner I always sprinkle in some Season-All, garlic, black pepper and I'd have to go to the kitchen to tell you what else I put into it. All my spices are on a shelf in the cupboard. Pretty has spices on one side and my spices are on the other. Some we both use but we don't eat the same things so we both have other things we like in our food.

@TheSojourner We have to share. Until Pretty puts me into a home, at least. Thanks. I love to cook for friends... Pretty won't eat anything with cabbage in it.

My ex-friend Whozeewhatzit, has a genius-level IQ, and no common sense to speak of. Several of my family members and I have celiac disease, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, wheat allergy, and gluten intolerance. Whozeewhatzit ridiculed me for eating what I did because, in his little pea-brain of a genius-level mind, the word gluten was derived from the word gluttony. It was a laugh riot listening to him try to explain his reasoning (which was actually brought on by the gluten-free diet fad from about a decade ago. This idiot thought gluten-fee had gone away because he wasn't finding gluten-free sections in stores anymore, and so insisted that no one needed to be gluten-free, so they got rid of the foods. I sneaked a gluten-free cookie to him once, and he flew off the handle. It did not taste like a Toll House. And, he was right, because I did give him one of the blander cookies, but processed gluten-free foods have come a long way over the years. Still, I am picky when it comes to "bakery" goods. Most gluten-free breads crumple worse than (hard) taco shells.

That's very interesting, never thought of things that way. I know that if you give up sugar long enough your taste buds can change and all that....so who knows! I know that if I try to bake low carb desserts, they usually taste pretty bad lol! No, not everything...but a lot haha

That made me laugh, ya know, I've always had trouble dieting because I like the taste of things far too much. I remember my mom going on a similar diet and she took a healthy recipe and decided to add some stuff to it to make it taste better which kind of defeated the purpose lol but I ended up liking it. I like a lot of healthy things but I also like flavor. One of my favorite snacks is cucumbers and vinegar which if you're looking to lose weight that's a good filling snack barely has any calories but you have to like vinegar. When I was pregnant I didn't want to eat much other than vinegar. I couldn't get enough of it. I guess if you are deprived enough a lot of things you wouldn't normally like sound good. I know when I haven't eaten all day everything sounds good even food I don't normally want.

I used to loathe a lot of food when I was a child, specially veggies. I now love all of them. But I discovered when I grew up and started cooking that at home veggies were overcooked. I prepare them all al dente. Disgusting cauliflower became one of my favorite veggies. I can even eat it raw, marinated, with garlic mayo as an appetizer.

Oi...I remember my parents going on the "Cabbage soup Diet" a couple of times, and I went along with it for as long as I could stand it. The recipe for the soup (I think on the diet you had to have it for one or two meals a day)may have been healthy and low calorie, but had nothing whatsoever in it that added a whole lot of flavor.

I remember the cabbage soup diet. I don't think I've eaten it since then I can honestly say that I think we can trick ourselves into thinking a diet version of something we enjoy (especially a dessert) can taste good. I've made a diet soda cake (uses a cake mix and mix with one can of diet soda and bake). It comes out dense but it's a good substitute for the "real" thing. I tried to serve it to my oldest daughter and she said it was gross

What was used in that pie? Years ago a friend gave me a bunch of sugar free jam and that stuff slowly went down the toilet- it appeared I was eating it but instead the loo was.

I believe so too. I used to be on an intermitent diet and the first few week was a struggle to the point that I am able to eat my sister's cooking. She was no good of a cook.

When you are on a very strict diet your tastebuds change, I think. If you do without sugar, you actually crave it less. So yes, I think bad things can taste good when you are dieting.

I had to take only boiled vegetables, pulses and rice without any garnishing when I was suffering from jaundice. I had to take it though I did not like it.

Healthy diets can be fun and taste good too. Just put thoughts of deep fried anything and lots of candy in the deepest recesses of your mind.
