Spending tax-payers' money on ridiculous projects

The photo isn’t connected to the discussion but shows some of the endurance riders at the event we attended on Saturday. I loved the pony lower right. It looks like a circus pony. But I wanted to talk about something else. I’m sure most would agree that governing bodies/national authorities do seem to waste a lot of fun on some very trivial schemes. The latest I read about was an investigation as to whether texting on a mobile phone while walking was more likely to increase the risk of falls. I mean – honestly?? Surely that could be taken as a given. But no, hundreds of dollars of, I’m assuming, tax-payers’ money goes into a subject that surely doesn’t need researching at all.

All four of the horses are beautiful. I've been griping about government waste since the $400 hammer came to light in military spending. (One guy who owed money to the IRS even attempted to pay his bill with hammers purchased from a hardware store, claiming each one was worth $400, of course. I don't blame him. That price is obviously ridiculous!)

I hadn't heard about that but that's just crazy. They waste thousands in our country too, in all sorts of ways.

@JudyEv The high-priced hammer happened a long time ago.

This happened in Colorado about ten years a go. A man hole was opened and a teen was walking and talking on his cell phone. He fell into the man hole. He got a broken leg from the fall.

@crossbones27 At least he was able to call 911 for help. He got in a lot of trouble from his parents. Some teens had ran off with the man hole cover and they were caught up the street .

Too bad we didn't propose this study, or any of the other useless ones that get funding. Sigh.

It's happening in our government as well, there are so many trivial research projects that it makes me wonder why they don't scrape them and focus that money on more pressing issues

You're correct. It's as if our governments would rather throw money into pots for non profits with no real worth.

@Judyev One of these days, as I look out over the fence at the graveyard behind our house, I’ll probably notice some council employees checking headstones to ensure that the graveyard population has the correct ratio of corpses from ethnic and other minorities, and if there are not enough such representatives, some native Irish corpses will have to be exhumed and replaced with others - and the tax payer will have to foot the bill for the survey and the remedial action. However I think we might be ok because I personally have buried an Angolan and a Dutch homosexual in this graveyard.

@JudyEv Voting for a woman just because she is a women is a bit silly - she might be very, very useless simply because she is useless, nothing to do with gender. .

That would be hilariously funny but it's not beyond the bounds of possibility. People/councils are stupid enough. And trying to have equal gender numbers in government. I'm all for it but only if those elected are the best people for the jobs.

Three Arabs and an Arab/warmblood cross (lower left). Arabs predominate but more and more standardbreds are being used now as their temperaments are better for less experienced, maybe older, riders.

I wonder if anyone has spent any time researching into whether being elected to public office immediately reduces IQ by 20 points. Or is it only stupid people who stand for election?

@JudyEv The great Billy Connolly once said that the desire to be a politician should bar you for life from being one. The current crop (no matter which country you are in) are definitely proving him correct.

I sometimes think the smart people have too many brains to get involved with politics. How long is it since the world has seen a real statesman?

Governments love to waste money, especially here in Victoria. They will spend thousands of dollars putting in a new roundabout, only then to replace it, a year, or two, later, with traffic lights. Somebody didn't plan properly there.

Some people invented ways to get money from the government. And their research companies have all sorts of arguments why their study is so important.

That's true. In India the government invests money in projects and leaves them half completely or projects are a failure. That's how they waste the people's taxes.
