Strong and weak passports

The photo has nothing to do with the post. It’s of a rider from last year’s Blackwood Marathon. We’re heading to that event a bit later today. I didn’t know about strong and weak passports but there is a Henley Passport Index which lists which countries have ‘strong’ passports, meaning that, with their passports, you don’t need a visa. In the 2023 index, Japan topped the list with South Korea and Singapore tying for second. Those with a Japanese passport can enter 193 destinations visa-free out of 227 global destinations. UK and US occupy 6th and 7th places with 187 and 186 destinations respectively

I don’t think I knew there was much of a difference. Of course, I haven’t left the country in twenty years.

The only other country I've ever been to was Canada. I was there twice when I was in my teens and nothing was required and again maybe different years ago to watch a play at Stratford and then I needed an enhanced id or passport. But that was after 911.

@JudyEv I forgot I was in Guatemala too but I'm sure the passport worked there.

@MarshaMusselman @AmbiePam Some countries you need a visa if you want to visit but sometimes you just need a passport.

I haven’t thought about it but supposed a passport would get you in anywhere.

@RubyHawk A passport is sufficient for countries with reciprocal or otherwise VOA : Visa on Arrival. Not otherwise.

Unfortunately my country's passport is weak. I need to apply for visas when I travel abroad

I understand. It just depends on the country you want to travel to.

When the EU was first established, it made travelling in Europe much, much easier as you didn't need visas.

I read about this a few months back. That Article illustrated that Indian Passport doesn't provides Visa Free entry to many countries, even though the score has improved. The best countries like Japan has folks with the best reputation of being law abiding and peaceful. At the bottom of the list, we perhaps have some Pariah nations and those with a lot of internal conflicts, Terror cells and the likes. The people from there could be under more suspicion, so no visa free entry. Why the score is not good for India is a matter of debate. Perhaps the independent Indian stand on many International issues doesn't suits many countries, or may be some other reason. A casual question: What is the rank of Australia and New Zealand?

Australia ranks 6th with other countries (187) and NZ is 5th (189). But I found different scores on different sites. All were about the same.

I guess it's just a matter of whether you need a visa or not.

@JudyEv I never checked which destinations are not covered. I know for sure that North Korea, Iran, Iraq and Libya are not covered... but who wants to go there? I know that my brother needed a special "pass" to visit Cuba.

So 190 would cover a great many of the more popular countries.

@LadyDuck There are quite a few countries that I have no desire to visit but travelling overseas is just about a thing of the past for us now.

I don't know anything about passports. I've only been to Mexico and don't need one for there. I only had to show my driver's license to get back into the US.

That's interesting. I didn't know there was such a thing as a strong and weak passport. It's also interesting that the Asian countries top the list.

Do you class them are less desirable than some other nationalities? And when we were there, we got to Achill Island. I think you had/have family there? What a lovely place. The site I just checked says Ireland is in 5th place.

Oh, I don't travel internationally very often, but I thought it varied by country based on mutual agreements. Like Americans don't need a visa for Canada, but maybe we do for other countries.

Yes, you're correct. Some passports give you free access to more countries than some other passports.

Visas and passports used to drive me crazy with our visiting professors and scientists at LSU when I was still working. There are SO many different kinds with limitations on all.

@JudyEv Yes that sounds like smooth sailing there!! It was mind boggling since my department had visitors from all over: UK, China, Japan, India, Africa, and more! And of course they all require different things!

I can believe that although I have no experience with it all. When we toured Europe, the EU made it easy. No visas required and no changing currency from one country to another.
