Christmas Mistletoe

@celticeagle wrote a discussion about mistletoe a few days ago saying she had never seen mistletoe growing in trees. All the oak trees in this complex are full of mistletoe. I told her when enough leaves fell from the trees to see the mistletoe I’d take a picture. It’s cloudy here and has rained most of the day but when I bundled up and went out for my walk, I looked up and saw a tree full of mistletoe. It’s a dark cloudy day but you can see the mistletoe in the tree. I’ll take another picture when the suns shining.

That's how the trees on my sister's farm in Arkansas look after they lose their leaves for the Winter, too. We used to go to her farm and shoot mistletoe out of the trees when I was growing up for mom to hang in doorways. Nice photo!

We did the same thing. I don’t know any other way to get the mistletoe down. You sure can’t climb up there to get it.

@RubyHawk One of my older brothers was part monkey and he'd climb trees and saw the mistletoe off and drop it down to us. It was easier for the rest of us to shoot it with a .22 to get it down.

@DaddyEvil I can’t imagine anyone climbing so high in the trees but that would save your bullets.

@RubyHawk It could be a type of orchid that grow in forests here.

Maybe mistletoe doesn’t grow in all parts of the country.

@allknowing We don’t have orchids growing in trees here that I know of. We do have ivy that grows in trees.

Kool shot you got. I've never seen it on trees either but then there really aren't that many trees around here.

That explains it, there are very few oak trees here probably because we don't have enough rain or humidity.

Mistletoe grows on oak trees. I don’t know if they grow on other trees.

@rebelann It might grow on other trees, but I’ve only seen it on oaks. We have lots of oaks in Georgia.

It’s awfully dark, but it was a dark day. I’ll make another picture when it’s sunny.

I never thought about or saw mistletoe before, except for the fake plastic kind you put up at Christmas. Made me research it a bit and found out the plant is 'hemiparasitic', which means it takes some of its food from another plant. Thus, clumps are able to grow on trees. According to the source there are over 900 species of mistletoe around the world. That a lot of evergreen berries!!

I see a lot of mistletoe. When my boys were growing up. They each one got a rifle for their twelve birthday, then we went out in the woods at Christmas and shot down a load of mistletoe to hang over all the doors in the house. The way things things are today, I would never give a child a rifle, but we lived in the country and that was the custom. My boys still have their rifles.

@RubyHawk That's really cool! And authentic mistletoe at that. Yes, it's a different world today, and not all for the better. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!

We used to place it over the doors at Christmas so the guys could steal a kiss. You know that’s why it’s placed over the door.

No, there’s no way to get it down that I know of. Years ago we shot it down, but that was out in the country. The only way to enjoy it here is looking at it in the trees.

I think mistletoe is poisonous, could be the berries. I’ve never heard of anyone eating it.

We have mistletoe in our trees here but I'm not sure if it's the same. We have a lot of the same words but for things that are different or at least slightly different.

My neighbor has a tree full of mistletoe. It stands out like a sore thumb in the winter when all the leaves fall off their tree.
