Money-Saving Tips - Part 2 - Groceries

No one will deny that it's a pain in the wallet to go grocery shopping these days. Here are some tips for getting the most for your money. You may have heard of these before; but it doesn't hurt to repeat them!
GROCERIES
*Never go grocery shopping without a list and stick to it. Wandering aimlessly around the store will tempt you to buy something you don't need.
*Join the reward or loyalty program at your store. Ours offers a % off groceries or fuel perks (reduced price at the pump).
*Clip coupons and/or use eCoupons.
*Shop from the sales flyers. Instead of planning meals and then shopping for ingredients, plan your meals based on what's on sale that week. You'll save a lot more money that way.
*Check the fridge, pantry and freezer before putting an item on your list. Buying duplicates just wastes money unless there's a huge sale on that item and you know it will get used up.
*Don't shop when you're hungry. It's too tempting to put unneeded snacks, etc. in your cart.
*Use a calculator to keep track of your spending. Round out prices as you shop to get a nice surprise of a lower bill at the checkout.
*Check unit prices. That "bargain size" package may not be the best buy.
*Read labels. Try to avoid items that are high in sodium, fat or a lot of preservatives.
*Avoid pre-packaged items. That cut-up fruit or appetizer platter is loaded with extra cost. The same goes for meats like beef stew. Instead, trim and cut up a chuck roast instead of buying the beef stew meat already processed.
*If you find yourself throwing out fresh produce at the end of the week, consider buying frozen or canned vegetables and fruit.
*What about warehouse memberships like Costco or Sam's Club? Memberships are not cheap. Don't get one unless you can shop there on a regular basis and can use large quantities of items. As always, check unit pricing. Watch out for coupons offering discount membership pricing via direct mail or in magazines.
**SHOP GENERIC. I stress this one because you can save a bundle by buying generic items. There are still a few items where we prefer brand names; but we purchase generic items whenever we can. For example, buying Morton Salt will cost you about 62% more than a generic salt. Pharmaceuticals is another area (supplements, vitamins, eye drops, bandaids, etc.) in which we save a lot.
*Look up and down. Stores usually stock higher priced items at eye level. Look for generic items on the higher or lower shelves.
*Shop in season produce. Prices should be lower.
*Are you too tempted when in the store? Shop online and pick up your groceries at the curbside pickup.
*Limit your grocery shopping trips. Try and get EVERYTHING you need on a trip. Otherwise you will go to the store again for that one item and be tempted to pick up items that you don't need.
*Meat is expensive. Try a Meatless Monday once and a while. Mac and cheese with a couple of veggies is one example for a meal.
*Use your credit card wisely. If you get cash back at grocery stores, pay by credit card; but be sure to pay the whole bill when it comes in.
*Use rebate apps like Ibotta and Rakuten.
*And last, but not least, use up what you buy. There's nothing worse than having to throw out food. @TheSojourner was great at showing us how to do this.
What tips do you have?

We miss the discussions of our friend @TheSojourner, she was very good in utilizing everything left in the fridge.

Shopping on an empty stomach is always a bad idea we all notice that in our house
. I almost always buy generic when I do the grocery shopping. We just got a rewards program at our local grocery store and unfortunately if you don’t use the card not only do you not earn reward points but you also don’t get the sale prices which my husband keeps forgetting.

@LovesEverybody I hate that I wish stores that did that would just give not let you collect the points if you don’t have your card but would still give you the sale prices.

You left nothing left for our imagination.
For me it is important to buy small quantities as I live alone and to use all leftovers. I can do that as I´m a good cook. I buy only a few canned groceries. I buy dry legumes, soak them and boil all the amount in a pressure cooker. Then I separate them into servings and freeze them. I fix them with salt, spices and caramelized onion and such when I have it thawed for use in the day.

@LindaOHio Right now potatoes are very expensive so I´ll stick to rice and pasta as sides. I have to be careful to save on that so that I can spend on my luxury yommy food.

@LindaOHio I rarely use a list. Most of the time the list stays home, forgotten, but the fact I wrote it down helped me remember what I needed.

Great list. Thanks for sharing it with us.
I think not going when hungry is important. I never use coupons. I used to accumulate them but never remembered to use them. I think it's a good idea to be aware of the perks your store might provide. We have ours delivered and sure appreciate this service.

Thank you those are great thoughtful tips. I have a very strict budget and before I do my monthly grocery orders I always go through the Walmart site and see what is offered, Then I make a list of what I will order and change ti accordingly through each month so when I am ready to order I have a ready list and just follow it and make my order,

My mom's friend eats before going to the store to avoid buying too many things. Wonder how successful he is doing that.
I love paying for groceries with my credit card. Much faster checkout than paying with cash and I get cashback. Downside is that some places charge a 4% fee for paying with a credit card. In that case the cash back becomes less than the fee so best to pay with cash, if available.
There are some things like mayo, toilet paper, or paper towels, for example, where I don't want to go generic. I also prefer Heinz ketchup to others but the one with no high fructose corn syrup is very expensive. I usually buy it only when it's on sale and get store brand when it's not.

4% is very steep. We have certain things which we only buy brand names - TP and tissues are two.

Currently we buy fresh produce at market, heck of a lot cheaper than supermarkets;
If you eat meat, poultry or fish, buy bone in and make stock;
A chicken carcass, even after cooked for stock, is good cat food
We check unit prices, not all bulk prices are a saving;
Make sure your meat is not brined - a horrible practice by some manufacturers to inject meat with brine in order to increase weight but it reduces the cooked weight

Thank you very much for the tips. Another is to not buy beef stew meat. Buy a chuck roast, trim and cut the pieces yourself.

I would only add to manage your pantry well and keep it well stocked, and to NEVER shop at only one store. Buy when you need to replenish something and only do it at the absolute best price and time your shopping according to who has the best price and what needs to be stocked.
Some people think the latter means more shopping stops. Nope. This week maybe it's the main grocery store. The next maybe it's Walmart. The next maybe it's Ruler. You never NEED something if your pantry is well stocked and by the time you add an item to the list you are not out of it. You're just ALMOST out of it, so you have some time to wait and time things accordingly to save money.

Those are some really helpful tips. It's so informative. I am so proud that I follow almost all of them. Most of my grocery shopping is online through various apps and stores. We have free delivery. And I would check all the offers on various platforms before placing an order. And I limit the frequency of grocery shopping.
The one suggestion about planning the meal according to cheaper ingredients is something I don't do. I should do that
