Freak Accident

My dear friend called me yesterday. Her little 2 year old grandson accidentally damaged her eye with one of his toys. He was excited and ran to her and somehow the toy struck her eye. Many years ago she lost her other eye, so now she is nearly blind. She had an operation this week to try and repair her eye and restore her vision. She can see a bit of light. The swelling needs to come down and the blood and fluids absorb into her body before they’ll know if she’ll have vision again. My heart breaks for her. We first met in the rehab for the blind nearly 40 years ago. Both of us have eye conditions. We’ve always known that our vision could worsen or that we could go blind, but to suddenly go blind is frightening. At least we know there is a wonderful rehab that can help her learn to live without vision if the surgery doesn’t work. Good thoughts and prayers are appreciated.

@TheHorse yes, they gave her several meds and one is for pain. It’s just not helping much.

I have learned to appreciate my eyes so much in the last couple of years.( I had a cataract.) I sure hope the operation is successful.

Vision is very precious, but I do know that life can be good without it.

@Tampa_girl7 ........Humans can certainly make allowances for things. Some do better than others.

Yes, I had my eyes damaged at birth by forceps. My optic nerve was knocked out of place. I am legally blind.

@allknowing If I get close enough and I use eye glasses and magnifiers I can see most things fairly good. My vision is poor enough to be considered legally blind, but I do see. I have been able to achieve most things but can’t drive a car. It is all that I have ever known. I feel blessed for the vision I have.

@Tampa_girl7 I am, I knew that when it occurred.
I remember that a nun, Sr. Girarda, who was on the spiritual team at the hospital came in on the day that my vision was returned to me. She sprinkled holy water on me from Lourdes as she prayed over me.
I think that was how I regained my vision.

It is my friend that had the eye injury. Her grandson is the one who accidentally injured her.

Wow, what a freak accident indeed. My heart goes out to her, and I hope she’ll be okay in the long run.
When my brother and I were younger, it was summer vacation and both our parents were at work. We invited all the neighborhood kids over to our house (after mom explicitly told us no kids allowed over), and one of them had a bow and arrow and was running through our house chasing after us. He rounded a corner in the hallway and ran smack into a girl. And you guessed it, the arrow poked her right in the eye. Blood everywhere and we all freaked out. Thankfully, the arrow actually pierced her below the eye, but we didn’t know that at the time. This was before toy arrows had suction cups on the ends.

@Tampa_girl7 Lucky indeed. We were going to try and cover up the whole incident so we wouldn’t get in trouble for having kids over while the parents were at work, but there was so much blood everywhere and we couldn’t get the bleeding to stop.
