13-year and 17-year cicadas will emerge at the same time this year. The last time this happened was 1803. Cicadas spend most of their lives below ground, feeding on tree roots. In the spring, when the soil temperature reaches approximately 64 degrees Fahrenheit (18 degrees Celsius), the cicadas will emerge. Brood XIII will emerge in Illinois, Wisconsin, Ohio and Iowa. Brood XIX will emerge in Missouri, Illinois, Louisiana, North Carolina, Virginia and Maryland. The mating process lasts approximately 6 weeks; and the cicadas will be gone by late June.
Ohio wants to pay students for attending school. A pilot program is being proposed in which $1.5 million of taxpayer's money will be paid to K-9th grade students to go to school. $500 will be paid for K-9, $250 will be paid if they graduate high school with a higher amount if they obtain a 3.0 grade point average or higher. This program is to fight growing absenteeism. What is this world coming to when we have to pay kids to attend school?
58 days until spring.

It's going to be a bit noisy outside when those cicadas emerge.
It's definitely an incentive for kids to go to school, but I doubt it will work. If kids don't want to go, nothing will make them go.
Your food looks good.
Yesterday was Raisin Bran and a banana for breakfast and salmon and rice for lunch. Snacks - banana, Oreo cookie, and DC Dove Promise chocolate. The scale was good. I didn't gain or lose.

I agree. They won't see the money anyway. The parents will.

I cannot think that such an incentive would be successful, and how long will they allow it to be 'tried' before scraping it? The taxpayers will not be happy about footing that bill.
We had chicken and dumplings for supper last night with organic baby carrots.
We went out for a beautiful brunch, I had poached eggs, bacon and part of a pancake.

The money goes to the parents anyway; so what incentive is that to the kids?

And then with my luck they will visit me in Florida

I had one pork patty and one chicken patty with tater tots. I put a mix of peach preserve and soy sauce mixed together on top of each patty,

@LindaOHio OK, I'm feeling more lenient this morning. Teach them to change tires and stuff.

I heard that will be an issue - but never dealt with them here thankfully. I can't imagine how noisy that would be.
Well kids don't want to go to school anymore....my son would probably want to go more if he could get money for it. But it's a fight every morning to get him up and ready.

The money is controlled by the parents; so the kids really don't benefit.

@LindaOHio Well if the parents are not greedy it could benefit the kids. I'd put it into an account at least for my son if they did that here.

I doubt that it will work. If the kids have access to it immediately, they will blow it on junk and electronics. If it is something they have deferred access to, it will not be a concrete enough reward to make a difference.

I believe that the parents will have control of the funds. No incentive to the kids.

I just mentioned to someone else in a discussion that schools get funding based on the attendance, so if they’re going to spend $1.5 million you can bet they’re going to be rewarded with at least ten times that amount in federal funding.
Chicken taco salad for lunch, chicken veggie & rice soup and a tomato sandwich for dinner…and peaches!

I don't think their plan will work since the students don't actually get the funds. The parents have control.

@LindaOHio Yeesh. I mean, I was in pest control for about 4 years and found myself in rather interesting predicaments...but...

@LindaOHio Many will only go to school to get the money and they will learn nothing.

@LadyDuck Yup. I don't think the payment plan is a good idea.

We just had a lot of noise I think last year around here from the locusts. Now I have to hear that again.
That might help kids who want to go but for some reason can't get there. But I don't think it will do anything for the rest.
