2/23/24 - Update on My Husband

Latest fiasco - Yesterday I got a call from the rehab facility that my husband's condition had deteriorated over the past 2 days and that he didn't recognize his nurse. He also wasn't able to swallow any food or liquids. They didn't know if this was physical or neurological; so they sent him to the hospital ER to get an ultrasound and CT scan of his throat. Then I get a call from the ER telling me that my husband is severely dehydrated and in AFIB. I told the nurse that he hasn't been able to swallow and he was sent there to get some tests done. She laughed and said that he was joking around with her and drinking water. Nothing was said to her about any tests or problems swallowing. All they said was that he had dementia (this has not been verified yet) and that he had deteriorated. They admitted him and are giving him fluids intravenously. They take much better care of him in the hospital than they do at that rehab facility. Photo Credit: Pixabay

Apparently, that is not a good rehab facility.

Unfortunately he cannot live in a hospital. Insurance will not cover it. I am sure you have not had any time to look into any facilities that specialize in dementia and Alzheimers. A good program and well trained staff can make a ton of difference.

The facility he is in specializes in that type of patient. They will have to show me much more than they are doing to convince me.

@LindaOHio If he can't eat by himself, they will have to have someone there to help him for every meal. They can't just let him starve because it is not convenient for them.

It seems the rehab facility needs someone to go in and clean house.

Well on the good side he was joking around and able to drink. The so-called 'rehab' is a joke though.

@LindaOHio Why would he not drink at rehab but will in the hospital? That seems strange to me.

@akalinus I don't know. The nurse said he was having problems eating some eggs. Couldn't get them down.

Glad he is out of that rehab. They were doing nothing for him. Hopefully he will get better care now. I can't even begin to imagine what you are going through.

Is it possible to get another MRI done without doctor's suggestion? Rehab people there are selfish or maybe the nurse in ER is not identifying you correctly. Whatever, being out from rehab is a better news.

In the US, we have to pay for every medical procedure unless it is covered by insurance. She would have to check into the finances for a second opinion.

The sad reality is that he can’t stay at the hospital without a medical necessity. And he would get better treatment at the hospital. They’re devoted to preserving life. A nursing home/rehab facility, on the other hand, is a place where people who don’t give a damn show up to make minimum wage money while they look for another job. Sorry to sound jaded, but I’ve seen enough of how my relatives were treated there.

Yep, I saw people devoted to the patients (very few) and most just wanted their paycheck. Once, in the lunchroom, I heard a lot of screaming and things being thrown at the walls and crashing all around. All the people there for lunch were dumbfounded. I am sure someone lost a job that day. I saw workers asking rude questions and running away laughing. I saw people walking the halls and sticking their noses in the air if you dared to ask them something.

It is a good thing if he joked with the nurse and could drink water. I wonder what happened at the rehab, there is something wrong with that place.

@LindaOHio Sometimes with Alzheimer's as the disease progresses people "forget" how to swallow food and water.

That is so infuriating. That rehab place should be closed down. I'm praying your husband will improve there in the hospital. I noticed that you posted this about 3am. You're probably not sleeping well with him gone, are you. I'll keep praying for your husband and also that God will bless you with peace of heart and a restful night's sleep.

Mike's Dad had dementia and he would forget how to drink, talk then a little while late it was as if nothing was wrong with him. As it progressed, he stayed more to the forgetting how side. Praying for you. I know how hard this is for you.

I can relate to the care they do in both the hosp & rehab from all the shifting back & forth in & out of the hosp I went through in my 6 mons, I was in 3 different hosp & in & out of rehab twice, I hope things can turn around for the better for the both of you, cause it's not easy on either 1 of you going through all this, it's very stressful.

@LindaOHio Life is tough but I think you are tougher. Just think about what would be best for him and make decisions based on that. And think about what would be best for you, too.
