3/30/24 - Update on My Husband

What a glorious day it was yesterday. I got to visit my husband at the rehab facility. Try as I might, I couldn't hold back the tears when I first saw him. I was so happy. His godson/cousin and his 2nd cousin (our housekeeper) took me there. Hubby told me that he took a few steps while being held up by two people; and he said that he feels stronger. He whispered to me, "You've got to get me out of here". He said the food is terrible, the nurses take an hour to respond to calls and when they do they make it sound like it's a great inconvenience. He wants to go back to the facility he was in once before. I left a message for them to call me. There was one bad discovery. The bathroom was disgusting; and no one had been in to clean it. Apparently my husband's roommate made a mess in there. I brought hubby his cell phone and several other things he wanted and some he didn't ask for such as his fishing magazine, chocolate, etc. I don't know how long insurance will continue to pay for his residence. I got a call yesterday from someone from the facility asking me if I could take care of him at home, etc. There is no way right now because he can't get out of bed on his own. I should call the insurance company and see what his coverage is. Thank you all for your encouragement, positive vibes, prayers and continued support. Photo Credit: Pixabay

I feel sorry for your husband, that place does not sound to be a nice place where to stay. Of course you cannot take care of him at home, if he needs two men to hold him, there is no way that you can take care of him. I hope you can find a better place until he gets stronger.

Well it is good to hear how he is doing, and that he feels stronger. Sorry the place is how it is, though. That's great that you finally got to see him!

@LindaOHio That's good to hear. Not a happy easter here, it's snowing. Looks disgusting out there.

I am glad he was in good spirits and feels like he is getting stronger. At least they are working with him there! The conditions do not sound like they are up to par there. This seems to be standard in most rehab and nursing homes these days. So sad! I hope you can find another place to give a try at.

It's so good to hear that your husband is feeling stronger. It sounds like that place is no good. I would hate to have my husband or family member say that to me. I hope you can find him a better place. How awful! I hope you can find something better for him. Don't they have a group with your state that helps find the right place for such situations? Do you have a program manager? I hate a dirty bathroom.

@LindaOHio .......Ugh! I wonder why they are still open. Sure that is a serious violation. It should be reported.

Admissions was gone for the weekend; but I will call again tomorrow. He really likes the place he stayed at before. Yes, a dirty bathroom does it for me. I couldn't stay there.

It seems very heartless how such facilities want to turf people out before they're well enough. I'm glad you had such a good visit.

It's the insurance companies that don't want to pay for a long stay.

It just doesn't sound like a good place for anyone to be. I would be tempted to report them to the state medical board, I have never done that, but if I saw what you have described, I definitely would not hesitate. That kind of treatment and then the bathroom issue is just not acceptable at all.

If the bathroom is still in the condition it was, I'm going to call the head honcho there again and complain.

@LindaOHio That would be a good thing to do. Dirty bathrooms anywhere are not acceptable, but in a health care facility with people with frail help, it’s critical.

We are not eligible. We are not under the $ amount. The only way we can get on Medicaid is to put our assets in a trust which I won't do. The VA has set me paperwork to fill out to get health benefits from them. It's pretty complicated. I'll have to look up a lot of info.

I am encouraged you encouraged. Hope the best for you both. Their needs to be a better way to do this for both of you. More affordable, more so husband does not feel he will be a burden. That's a lot , why people never admit they are sick, but screw all that, lets just take a victory when we can get one. I am glad you hubby and you get to enjoy more life together. What its supposed to be about.

It sounds like a very sweet visit you two shared. It must have been very encouraging to hear him tell you what he did, as you can be sure that his mind is back to what it was. Now for him to get steadier on his feet, and you will be back under the same roof again.

Good news that he is starting to walk even if it's with help. Glad you got to see him. Yes you need to know just how long insurance will cover so call them. Ask about home health while you have them on the phone too. Then you know what to expect

I know how your hubby feels, the rehab I was in was a awful but at least I was in a room by myself .... well, it was in 2020 so covid rules wouldn't allow people to double up in a room .... and the help cleaned everyday. I hated the food, it was terrible.
