Solar Eclipse 2024

April 8, 2024 2:57pm CST
How it looked from my side yard in Olney Illinois during the 4 minutes of totality. Most definitely one of the coolest things I have ever witnessed. It got dark enough the street lights came on and I could see stars. I'm so glad it didn't cloud up on us. Shot with a Canon SX410 IS, no filter.

@Scarred4Lyfe I will consider what Number 1 might have been but I don't really need to know.

@TheHorse Another celestial event. The first time I saw Saturn with a real nice telescope.

Quite possibly the coolest thing I have ever seen. If not 'the', then definitely in the top 2.

I knew it, no need for me to travel hundreds of miles when someone like Scar would show me what it looked like, Awesome. So, did you get any street level images?

I just wondered what it was like if you were walking around and not looking up.

@rebelann I can best describe it as looking like extremely bright moonlight during part of it.

Um - not sure what you mean by 'street level'. I had a camera on a stand with a tight zoom trying to follow the sun.

This is the best solar eclipse shot I have seen, congratulations! We had a total one in 1999, it was August, blue sky and suddenly total darkness. It was worth watching. Your Canon SX410 IS is a great camera. Smartphones cannot take that kind of pictures.

@Scarred4Lyfe The eclipse of 2017 was more visible in the west of Switzerland, the only 100% I remember is the one of August 1999.

We had the one 7 years ago, but it was only 97% eclipsed then.

That's a really great shot. Very cool indeed. Did the cats take any notice of it? Prowl around? Act funny?

Didn't appear to bother them any, birds got really noisy like it was bedtime.

That is so AWESOME - you captured it ! It was only partial here . . . it was daylight with a grayish hue . . . I only saw what I could through a colander on the porch - oh and the live cams online.

Did you look into the lens when you took the photo? As far as I know, the light at this time is not very good for the eyes.

The sun is safe to look at when it is completely obscured like in my discussion photo, but for the other pictures (such as this one) I had to use a filter.

Yes, you were lucky you didn't have clouds. We did but the sun was down anyway. Great shot tho! It almost makes me think such event is not so overrated after all.

@Scarred4Lyfe My god, yes! I didn't know it would go that extreme, pretty dark with this ring of light up there. Sinister but fascinating.

Having that looking down on you from the sky was simply breathtaking.

I watched the totality on a “railfan” cam out of Princeton, Indiana. The street lights did come on. The thing I think that’s most amazing about it is the 360-degree sunset.

@Scarred4Lyfe — thought Orville Redenbacher was from Brazil, Indiana (same town as Jimmy Hoffa).

You got an excellent shot of it. We were in the path also, and it went dark here also, it was something to see in the middle of the day.

I'd been through a few partial eclipses over the years, 7 years ago it was 97% eclipsed where I live, but a total is sooo much cooler. I can understand how the primitives felt, their awe to behold what they did not understand...

You didn't need a special filter so you could view through the lens?

During totality you don't even need glasses.

Just a total 'wow' moment (actually almost 4 minutes but). You could hear people around town start hootin' 'n hollerin' in their yards.

I couldn't find any protective glasses, Wal Mart was sold out. I saw this total eclipse when I was a young girl, maybe 13 years old. I'm 72 years old, so that was about 59 years ago. They warned us not to look at the sun during the eclipse, so I did!
