A scene from a year ago

After a bit of a scare the other night when I took Vince to Emergency, he has been doing really well. He is doing more for himself and we’ve been for two half-decent walks outside of the house. He isn’t sleeping quite so well as he has come off the sleeping pills on the advice of the doctor we saw at the hospital. The doctor thought he was probably already addicted to a small degree as he has been taking them since the operation. Although he is awake a bit at night, he naps during the day. He is much more alert than he was so it’s all good. It was interesting that the doctor told us how important it is to get good restful sleep even if you’re fit and well. I guess I knew that but didn’t realise how important it was. Coincidentally, I read an article the other day saying mental health issues in teenagers are tied up with sufficient sleep. We’ve had visitors most days but none have stayed for long. They have helped to pass the time and helped Vince realise he hasn’t been forgotten about. People here are really kind and his siblings have been very supportive too. The photo is one I love of Vince taking the 'girls' back to their pen at one of our house-sitting places.

Sleeping pills are addictive, I am glad the doctor told Vince to stop and I hope he can sleep naturally again soon. I am so glad that people come to visit you, it is so important for the moral and being happy helps to get well faster. I remember this photo and I love it, the girls were good girls.

@LadyDuck We both don't sleep very well. I won't take sleeping tablets and Vince hasn't had one since we spoke to the doctor.

Until the operation, he'd only ever had half a one maybe once every week or so but with the pain, he had been taking one each night.

That picture is cute. The 'girls' as you have called them are in step with your husband (lol) I have never taken sleeping pills as they are quite addictive I am told.

@JudyEv You should enlarge that photo and hang it in your hall. Worth it. Very rare scene.

I don't take them either but mainly because I have trouble swallowing any kind of pills. Vince fell in love with those girls.

I can see why this picture is dear to you. Getting outside in the daytime is supposed to help you sleep at night.

We've been for a short walk and he's sitting out in the sun now. I might research melatonin. He's on so much medication you hesitate to add another one.

It's good to know Vince is coming along. It may take several weeks or months until he feels a bit like himself. He sounds to be progressing though.

We've been warned time and again that it's a long recovery but he's doing well so far. He's certainly much better than this time last week.

It was wise of him to stop the sleeping pills. Now he can continue recuperating and relearning to sleep on his own but at least he will awake and feel clear headed. He has come through this quite well, I am sure that is a relief to you both as well as your sons, extended family and friends.

No doubt he'll continue to have good and not-so-good days but at the moment he's doing well.

Interaction with people helps post recovery. Hopefully the recovery shall continue and Vince would feel even better. Interesting picture even though I did not exactly remember the post. I recall that sometime early last year, you went to Ireland to one of your sons.

@annierose Thanks but they've now found a spot on one lung. We have a doctor's appointment tomorrow so will learn more then.

@Judyev Ah sleep, I remember it well but I haven't had much for 38 years since our first child was born. Now I don't really know how to do it. Good to hear that Vince is progressing.

I'm really happy to hear that Vince is doing better and I hope that goes for you too. I hope you have less worry and stress. Sleep is something we hear about all the time but I guess I never really thought it played much of a part in mental health. Guess we all need our beauty sleep. Love the picture of Vince taking the girls back to the pen.

Thanks, Marilyn. He is a very good patient and I'm coping pretty well. At least I think I am. I don't have anything else to do really so it's not hard. I thought it was interesting about needing sleep for mental health. I love this photo. I'll have to get a print copy of it one day.

The doctor at the hospital was more concerned about the sleeping pill than the strong pain-killer.

I told my doctor that after I’d recovered from bronchitis a year or so ago…it’s amazing how VITALLY important rest is for recovery. (Since I was always an hourly worker I didn’t want to take time off when I was sick, because no work = no pay. Much better at that now since I retired.) Still praying daily for you & Vince!!!

I hadn't really thought about how vital a good sleep is. I mean, you read about it all the time but some of these things don't 'stick' too well. Thanks for the prayers. He thought he might have walked right round the village this morning but it wasn't to be. However, he's doing much better than this time last week.

It greatly affects the recovery process when he knows he is well-loved. The doctors should know the best way forward.
