Where have I been today? All over Route 66 in Illinois! I started in Joliet, and I’ve only made it to Bloomington. It’s been a blast stopping in the small towns and seeing the museums, murals, and relics of yesteryear. One of those was Odell. As with most of the small towns that were along Route 66, when the Mother Road died so did a lot of the businesses. One fabulous place, however, was a gas station (more on it later) with this 1953 Winnebago sitting next to it. Look at the inside!! It’s tiny, true; however, remember that people didn’t have possessions out the ying-yang (and the accompanying desire to take them with them on vacation) back then. The tiny camper, with the time-tested diner that converts to a bed, would have sufficed. Even if it gives you claustrophobia to look at it, I’m sure you’ll appreciate the history behind it. Winnebago makes much bigger motor homes now. PHOTO COLLAGE: (Top left) Dining area/bed (Bottom left) Kitchen (Right) the Winnebago emblem on the outside

I love looking at these older campers. Now, they can’t really be called campers anymore, so many have what is basically a home on wheels with all the amenities. That big rig @powest has, has everything anyone could want! But for 1953, this was considered to be modern!

I always joke these days, am I really camping? I mean, I have running water, air conditioning and heat, a stove, a microwave, a TV, a nice comfortable bed to sleep in. Roughing it is not part of the equation, that's for sure. lol

@FourWalls Yes,it was. Now they even make luxury campers that have a side hold that you can park a car on a platform, hit a button, and your car moves into an enclosed space completely out of site. My Dad would have loved to see that!!

Come get me. You may be a right wing hillbilly, and I may be a leaning left wing punkster, but think of all the fun we could have. Trouble would be our middle name. I love the theory of a nomad life if uncertainty was taken out.

@FourWalls Dude, I was in Marines, I can hang with hardest right wing people, well, the rationale ones. Lots of fights, they all admitted I was right in the end. Most people right or left, the good ones could care less and just like to have fun and learn do not care what each other is. Amen, Even my sisters dream is get something like that, probably much more modern and just travel in one of those to see how pretty this country really is. Its a lot of history in such a short time. It would be neat to see it in person.

There are a few around here who have Winnebagos. There are plenty of other brands around too.

They’re the brand name associated with campers here, even though most of the ones you see these days are other brands as well.

I think I would get claustrophobia and would have no room for all my crap. Have a good day and drive safely!!!

The VW microbus at the museum would be more my style, although I sleep comfortably in my car when necessary.

It seems a far cry from our 39' travel trailer with all the amenities and creature comforts. But I imagine back in the day this was the bomb dot com.

Yep. That was 70 years ago, so you can imagine the neighbors oohing and ahhing over it.

As a 20 something I dreamed of owning one and cruising the USA ..... that lasted all of 10 minutes, I needed to work to put a roof over my head and food in my belly

It takes money to travel and even when I was in my 60s that wasn't something I had much of but then I'm so grateful I can be home with my kritters I travel vicariously through YouTube and people like you who share their experiences

I like old things like that. Now they have massage chairs in them, but THIS was the “lap of luxury” then.
