Dagnabbit, Damn Mushrooms

It's October. The month of spooks and goblins. But it doesn't mean I'm up for every horror this spooky month brings with it. On September 29th we made spaghetti for the fam for my mom's birthday, and I used one of the two 1/2-pound packages of mushrooms I bought. Before we left for our camping trip, I had every intention of freezing the other package. But lo and behold, they were still in the fridge, getting vinegary. Dagnabbit. I had to throw them away, and you know how I am about having to throw anything away. A ghost could come and threatened to take my soul, and it would be less horrifying than taking food and dumping it into the garbage can. Oh well, it is what it is. I can't go back. I can only find a way to make up for it and hope I don't forget next time and have to be forced to throw food away.

I hate throwing away food, too. That's why I don't go overboard buying fresh stuff, no matter how good a deal it is.

I made the mistake of thinking I was going to use both packages, and only wound up using one, and then we were off on a camping trip, and I forgot to freeze it before we left, then forgot it was even in there. It was a triple whammy on my part. lol

Don't beat yourself up over it. We all make mistakes at times.

@porwest Well, you know I don't want to waste anything, either. But once in a while, it does happen. My big thing lately is potatoes. For some reason, the last few months we have not been able to hardly get any good potatoes. And when you bring them home, and start peeling...a lot of them are full of black places, and there's not hardly any good left to them. I've returned 2 bags to 2 different stores. One, I didn't have time to take back, so I picked out what was good and used those. I realize they can't see inside of a potato, but I want fresh, good produce. For the prices they charge, that's what I should be getting, every time!

I throw out very little food but occasionally something hides in the dim dark recesses of the fridge and gets missed.

It happens to the best of us, of course.

I should restart food waste Friday posts! I used to clean the fridge out every Friday and take pictures and share our food waste to keep us in the habit of not wasting things.

I hate to throw food away...so I put left overs in the fridge for 3 days...if we don't eat it in 3 days..I cringe and throw it away. LOL

Oh no. Not me. If I have leftovers, they either get eaten or repurposed. It's a rule around here.

I try to buy only what we will eat when it comes to fresh fruits and vegetables.

So do I. This was just something I happened to have overlooked. I thought I was going to use two packages for a larger batch of sauce when we had the fam over for a spaghetti party to celebrate my mom's 74th birthday, then was going to freeze them before we left for a camping trip, came home and forgot they were in the fridge, and the rest was history.

That is very annoying. You could have thrown them outside to see if the spores would generate a new crop of mushrooms, then they wouldn't be wasted

Hmm. I wonder if that would have worked? Too late to try now, but maybe next time. Of course, if I see mushrooms in the yard, I'd no be sure that they weren't poisonous ones and not sure I'd want to risk eating them.

When my mom forages for mushrooms she then boils them and freezes them. But she’s never frozen store-bought mushrooms. I’ve never done that either. Are they good after? Why would you want to freeze them anyway?

@porwest I wonder if they sell them already frozen but like by themselves and not in a frozen entree.

@lovebuglena I'm not sure. Come to think of it, I am not sure I have ever seen frozen mushrooms in the supermarket. Certainly jarred and canned. Now I am going to have to look the next time I am in the freezer section at the store.

I am pretty sure I have frozen store bought mushrooms once or twice. They are never as good that way, but they are useable.

You can always use them for your garden if you have one. Although not in season now a good tip for future spoiled foods. Use them as a natural fertilizer. Mushrooms are rich in nutrients and can help improve soil quality. As they say... waste not want not

@dgobucks226 I have heard it adds nitrogen or something to the soil which is supposedly good for plants.

Hmm. I hadn't thought of that. But you're right. I could have put them into one of the pots. Too late now. As a matter of fact, I am going to put some coffee grounds into them now that I have the plants cleared out of them.
