A baby chick was born in my house tonight! What should I do?

All I wanted was a snack before bed. I cooked up some bacon, and found my eggs in the fridge. One seemed to be glued to the carton. I wrote it off as "two days of MyLot earnings." I grabbed a different egg, and it would not yield to my cracking attempts. Bang bang bang. Edge of the frying pan. It felt heavy. I thought I was just tired and weak. Today is my long day at Guitar Center. But then the cutest baby chick rolled out. It looked cold, but it was breathing. I boiled some water and took out my decorative rooster towel. I covered the chick up. It is starting to peep in my bathtub, and I don't know what to do with it. Would the Lindsay Wildlife Museum consider a baby chick to be "indigenous"? Are the hens around here being trollops? Am I hallucinating again? What would you do with a baby chick in your bathtub? Disclaimer: Parts of this post are actually true.

Your story is nice, but if you kept the eggs in the refrigerator no one is going to ask that he chick could be alive inside the egg, the cold kills the embryo.

@TheHorse My grandparents always had chickens, I remember granny keeping the eggs that she wanted to hatch under a lamp to keep them warm.

Must you be to "literal"? Natural selection does support "diversity." I believe this was an "arctic chicken."

@TheHorse Have another drink, and the baby chick will probably evolve into a turkey.

@MarieCoyle This made me laugh. Thanks. I would rather it evolve into a French girl who loves classical music.

@TheHorse ......The bathtub is a good place to keep animals. How nice to be able to save it and give it back to the wild.

Dearest Pony: Do you, by any chance, remember what did you smoke just now? Quantity? Quality? The chick story would be perfect if if could be true. I myself would ask you to send me 5 or 6 of your eggs. But you could even get rich selling them there.

@TheHorse - In the past you could find a fertilized egg when you bought. Now all eggs come from egg farms and there are only hens there.

I just had an egg with some bacon. Fortunately there were no baby chicks involved. Maybe I'll get my next batch of eggs at Trader Joe's.

Sometimes my fantasy life is more fun than my real life. I really did encounter an egg that would not break.

I enjoyed reading this. I kept a little chicken warm in the bottom of a sock once - after I'd taken my foot out. It turned out to be a hen but by then she'd been called The Beak.

@TheHorse She was with us for a while but when we shifted in 1984 she went to my Mum's. She hatched several lots of chickens (The Beak, not Mum) and was well-loved while she was there.

Hallucinating for sure. I once took a banty (bantam) egg out of our fridge to take to my room to hatch. I got caught. We were babysitting chickens for someone.

The chick rolled out into the frying pan? May I suggest a few leftover vegetables and some soy sauce for a quick stir fry . Luckily we have a local mom and pop pet store that carries wee chicks . . . I'd ask them what do I do with it!

@TheHorse Yep, they are so darn cute - when they are so teeny and fluffy. We don't bring them home either, but the kids would love that.

When I see baby chicks (usually at the feed store) I just go "aw." But I do NOT bring them home.

@much2say At the pet store, they are beyond the cute and slimy stage. Heh. I can see why the littlies (humans) cannot resist them.

Interesting story as I only know hatching is done under the brooding hen.

Oh, I wish. I hope the bathtub is empty. It's a chick after all, not a duck. I tried to brood an egg when I was a kid, but it came from the fridge and wasn't fertilized, so it didn't work. It would have been an amazing experience otherwise, I would have loved to have a chick running around and calling me "mom".
