Not very happy at the moment

At our house-sit, I’ve been working with my computer on my knee with a power cord running back to the wall. Tonight, Vince walked between me and the wall, caught the cord in his foot and pulled the computer off my lap. It’s working okay but all my photos were on an external hard drive and now the drive seems to be damaged and I can’t access my photos. When we get back to Perth, we’ll take it to a professional and see if they can save the photos. I haven’t backed them up for a while which is pretty stupid too. So the photo is one of Vince’s of a banksia. I really, really hope my photos can be recovered.

Poor Vince, he must feel awful for not noticing the cord. I hope that they can help you out when you get back to Perth. This is an interesting photo.

They look like old microphones... or bottle brushes gone bad.

He does feel bad. If we can recover them all will be well but it will be a bit of a blow if they've gone forever.

Do you mean copy and paste them? I guess so but I don't like using them over and over.

I am so sorry, I know I would be very sad not arriving to access my photos. I am sure a professional can recover the content of your hard disk.

@JudyEv Unless the thumb drive was broken in half or the insert part of it broken completely off, a professional should be able to retrieve most of the photos from it. There still might be some corruption in the pixels but I hope not.

Oh no, that sounds so stressful—I’m really sorry that happened. It’s one of those moments that just unfolds in a split second, and suddenly everything feels up in the air. I totally get how heartbreaking it must be to lose access to your photo collection, especially if they hold special memories. Don’t be too hard on yourself about the backup thing—we’ve all been there, thinking we’ll get to it “soon.” Hopefully the professionals in Perth can work some magic and recover everything for you. Sending good thoughts that your photos are safe and just waiting to be rescued!

@rsa101 Thanks for the information. I should probably do something like that. I intend to back up my work automatically from now on - as soon as Vince can set it up for me.

Years ago something like that happened to me but I finally just replaced the cord for the hard drive and then I got access to everything on it.

That was a good outcome. The drive itself is making a ticking noise so the damage isn't just to the cord.
