Grocery shopping and then coming home to freebies

Yesterday was my once a month ''biggie'' trip for pantry staples, etc. plus whatever else was on the list. I keep a running list of what I am going to be low on as far as staples I use to make our foods, so I checked the list, and off we go... Went to a restaurant supply store not far from the Aldi I like the best. It's not a club; anyone can shop there but I don't think many individuals do. I go to this store every once in a while, but hadn't been since before Christmas. I had heard that their produce was nicer and cheaper now, so I thought it might be worth the stop. It definitely was, but I did get some sticker shock to see how much restaurants are paying for their foods! The steaks there were wildly priced, as were some other items a restaurant uses. Big sacks of sugar and flour were more by the pound there than they are at a regular store like Aldi, Ruler's, or even Walmart. I bought lettuce, carrots, onions, potatoes, as they sell the produce in whatever quantity a person wants to buy. The prices and quality were more than fair. Headed for Aldi, got the rest of my list for the most part. There were a few things not available but that was OK. Oh, and for readers here who want to know the cheapest their eggs were, there were a few dozen of the medium sized eggs left at $3.99 I do have to say I looked at those eggs and they seemed...well, small for sure. The large eggs were $5.99 per dozen. I didn't need any but I always check the prices on them when I shop. Got home and there was a package on my porch. I didn't order anything. Picked it up, it weighed a ton! It was not addressed to me nor any of my neighbors, and it was from Amazon. I had been gone for quite some time and I have no idea how long it was on the porch. I called customer service for Amazon, they told me they had already replaced the order the hour before, and to keep the contents as it was food. OK. Free food is great, right? It was a box containing 25# of rice. Twenty. Five. Pounds. And a few months back when that one neighbor moved away, she gave me 25#. So now, I have like 50# of rice?? Even if I gave some to anyone who wanted any, I would still have way, way too much left. I am going to drop it off at the soup kitchen this week. They feed a lot of homeless and families that need a meal...and they make big meals, so I am sure they can use it up. And I STILL have rice out the wazoo... Not done yet. I got all of my purchases out of the car and unloaded in the kitchen. I had stopped at a local store as well, to get their sale items. Once again, close to Aldi so I could do that without a problem. Unloading that batch, and unpacking it, I discovered 5# of apples in a sack, and 2# of Vidalia onions. I checked and was not charged for them. I called them and told them I could return it, but not until Monday. They said I had a new cashier, and to keep the apples and onions. So, I guess I scored!! Pinterest picture

A neighbor who moved away had a big family and always bought huge quantities of some foods. She had given me a 25# bag...so I am going to donate this bag. I know a lady who volunteers there, I called her and she is going to pick it up tomorrow and take it there for me. I just don't want any of it to go to waste, and I can't get it all used up in a timely manner, so it's best to share this. However, I am hanging on to the apples and onions, we love fruit and use onions constantly!

Well, I guess starvation is not in your future. I had kind of a freebie weekend myself. I got two free plants over the weekend, and a free sticky bun this morning. I could have gotten two, but I declined. Freebies are fun, enjoy yours!

@snowy22315 Plants are so expensive now, so free ones are much appreciated, I'm sure.

I sort of felt bad about it, because someone had to go back and get the apples and onions they paid for, but I guess that's just how it's done when things get mixed up. Hey you scored! Sticky bun, yum!

@MarieCoyle At least you can drop some of it off with a homeless shelter... I'd have to haul it to Springfield to give it away.

@DaddyEvil I would keep some of the rice, but we already have that huge amount from the neighbor so we can't use it. The apples, we will definitely use though. I just don't like to waste food, so I would rather share it than tose it. Luckily there are places here that gladly accept food donations.

It's great that you can grocery shop at any time, I have to wait each month when my SS comes in and them stick ot my budget and still make it through a month with what I buy,

Rasma, when I get paid every month I take the list and do about 90% of shopping, and I am a very frugal shopper. I only go once a week to get milk and some produce in between, I plan meals, etc. So, other than fresh produce and dairy, I just shop once a month.

We don't have an Aldi here We have Albertson's and Fred Meyers, Costco, etc. I always check the price of eggs too. They are remaining at the same price you listed. I always remember, when thinking about grocery shopping and prices, my mother used to feed four of us for $60 a month. That was in the 60s, and we ate pretty well. She would shop the sales at about three stores. My grandmother could get a roast to feed 6 for $3.

I remember that having a roast was fairly standard for Sunday dinner. It never went to waste, we ate the leftovers or they ended up in the soup kettle. Now, a person might have to get a bank loan to buy a roast! Our red meat here is ridiculously high.

For sure you have food to eat for a while. I am glad they told you to keep the apples and onions. You have been a honest customer to let them know.

@MarieCoyle - I am glad that the store managed to fix this problem.

I hate thinking that someone else paid for them but the store said they would give the customer credit or replacement food so I hope whoever it was, they went back and got their items.

Nicely done. I haven't been to Aldi's or done Instacart in a few years. I might go back sometime this year.

I really like Aldi, and Ruler as well. (Ruler is like Aldi, but a division of Kroger.) Everyone seems to be hunting bargains, now more than ever.

That turned out a good shopping trip today. And once again, the free things came in threes. That does seem to happen a great deal - things happening in threes.

The only thing that scares me about the ''happens in threes'' thing is deaths. Several times in our family we have lost 3 close together, different reasons but it happened that way.

That was yesterday...I couldn't seem to get a discussion posted last night. I tried twice, and both times was when one of those pesky glitches happened and I didn't get to post. I was simply glad to get to go get the groceries, etc. and I picked up some meds for my son as well. I left a friend with him so I knew he would have some company, he hasn't been so good this week. I am hoping this next week, he feels better.
