A new law trying to shut down puppy mills

A new law has been passed in Western Australia which will mean pet shops will need to be licensed to sell puppies and such puppies may only come from rescue centres. This law is being brought in to try to close down ‘puppy mills’ where breeding is carried out with scant regard for the health and well-being of the dogs and puppies. One such establishment had over 100 animals, all in various stages of ill-health. The dogs have been confiscated and the owner heavily fined. It’s a step in the right direction but it’s just a pity that there is a need for such laws. More and more people here are taking in rescue pets which is also a good thing. The photo shows more of the peacocks at a service station in Western Australia.

They've been trying to do that here for a number of years now but it seems it's hard to catch all those fools who have no regard for the lives of animals.

Perhaps these laws will bring a few more convictions at least.

It probably will but there will always be those who can get away with these kinds of atrocities simply because their neighbors look the other way without mentioning it to anyone.

It would be nice if they could put an end to puppy mills. Our problem seems to be these snooty people who want a purebred dog. That’s a shame, because they don’t know what they’re missing in terms of love and companionship.

@FourWalls I'm glad to know you adopted. I wish I could say that Rufus is always a charmer but there is a reason I call him a Biker Dude. Love him to dog heaven, though. Moxe is a blue eye and brown eyed love. You adopt and you keep, no matter what.

@FourWalls There are purebred animals in shelters if a person must have purebred.

The animals are kept in the most horrible conditions. This is a good move.

Good. Shut down all the mills. There are hordes of innocent animals needing homes.

Oh, do I ever agree with this statement. If a person has ever worked in rescue, you learn quickly to HATE puppy mills. The puppies I have seen...so, so pitiful, and the mother's live in small cages their entire lives. It's no way to live. They do it to make money, so many are inbred and sickly...close them all down, forever. Make it a felony and punish the offenders. There are tons of animals out there to adopt--and many, many purebreds are in rescue. Personally, I think mutts are pretty cool, smart dogs. There are endless kitties that never find a home, it's so sad.

@thelme55 They are indeed. It's all about the money they can get for the dogs.

I think it is good too. There are way too many unwanted dogs in pounds as it is.

They are trying to do the same here in Europe, but some countries (like Romania and Hungary) still have plenty of those "puppy mills" and the dogs they sell are often sick animals.

@JudyEv - I feel so sad for those poor animals, I would hope that the laws would be more strict and of course that someone would be sure that the laws are respected.

The adults are kept in atrocious conditions and I can well believe the puppies being sold are in ill-health.

It is a shame it has only been intruduced in only WA. I hope other states will follow quickly & pass the same legislation.

I'm not sure what the laws are in other states. It's possible they already have them but I don't know that. There is often a flow-on effect between our states if laws are seen to be useful.
