Getting closer to party time…

My dad’s surprise party is a week from tomorrow. He told me the other day he didn’t want a surprise party. I held up my hands and said, “Dad, all I did was get you a birthday card.” Which is true. I bought a big one so everyone can sign it. We’ve had 250 RSVPs, and about 50 (it was a Facebook invitation) people who told us they’ll try. My sister wasn’t crazy about the “try” people. She wants definite numbers. I don’t blame her; she’s a very organized person.
It’s being held at his church. Saturday “morning” (the party is at 11:30am), my cousin is going to call my dad and tell him they are having an event up at the church, and they need some help with something (I’m sure they’ll make up specific details). He’ll go up there ( he lives 6 miles from the church), and you know the rest. All the cars will be expected, but obviously my sister and I will park in the back where he won’t recognize our cars.
We almost had a woman blow it. Somehow, she missed SURPRISE on the Facebook invitation, and started talking to him about the party. Luckily, his hearing is awful, and someone pulled her away before she repeated herself. He can’t hear much without his hearing aids, and he did not have them in.
There is one aspect of the party I’m not sure about. My dad has a sense of humor about himself, but my sister may have gone too far. The thing is, it was my idea. But I was kidding! My hope is he’ll find it hilarious. I wouldn’t have done it, but I’m not paying for it.
When it comes down to it, I think he’ll enjoy it. He’s not going to be happy that my sister didn’t specify no gifts, but he’ll just have to accept people like to give to people who gave to them.
If you’re wondering why the party is at 11:30am…I have no idea.
Wish us good luck!

I am a bit like your sister, I do not like the "I will try", but often there is nothing you can do.
I hope your Dad will be happy with the surprise party. Some people cannot keep their mouth shut, I am glad he could not understand what that woman was saying.

Good luck. I don't know 250 people. I doubt even 10 would come. I hope you have a good turnout and your dad enjoys the party.

@AmbiePam Yes. I have more friends here than I do in real life. Between MyLot and Facebook friends there would be a crowd.

You and your sister are such wonderful children to throw this surprise party. I am very hopeful that your dad will appreciate it and enjoy it. Seems like a grand one with 250 people already confirmed. I am also not happy about "will try" people. Something confirmed is better for clarity and planning.

This sounds like a wonderful surprise, but OH...so many people knowing, it will be very hard to keep it all from him. I hope that part works out! It's very hard to have food for so many, not to mention the ''we will try to be there'' people. All you can do is your best and hope that it's the right amount. No one wants tons of foods left over, for sure. I am sure it will be a very memorable time--try to line up someone who will video at least part of it for you--the initial ''SURPRISE!!'' and some of the special party. It will be wonderful to watch later on in life and remember.

Oh yes, I want to make sure there is one person in particular who is lined up to record it all.
I had anticipated walking in with him, but my sister rightly reminded me I’m not one to be at church events so it would make him suspicious.
He’s planning on being gone his actual birthday (4 days later) to avoid someone doing anything for him. I asked his wife and she said he legitimately has no clue. She doesn’t want to have anything to do with it since he always said he wouldn’t want one. It’s funny - my mom would be in on the fun.

I always enjoy going to surprise parties when a person really is surprised. I just hope no one blows it before the party! It will be so fun.

I hope that things work out nicely, there has been alot of thought and planning into this party.
And to pull off a surprise party is a tough job, but with that many guests it is really tough.
I'm sure that he will love the interactions and visiting that he will get in with his friends wishing him well.
