The guys are here to start working on the house. I talked with them about the different projects they need to get done and what we'd like to see after they finish.
One of them said they aren't allowed to go under the house and insulate there because the opening is too small
... (The opening is about 1 1/2 feet by 3 feet.) They need the opening to be 2 feet by 3 feet to meet guidelines for that type of work.
They asked if I wanted the old doors after they remove them
... I don't want them. I have no use for them.
It looks like I won't be getting any more sleep until they leave for the day.
I hope everybody is having a good day in your part of the world.

They cleaned up after themselves last fall. I hope they do again this time, too.
Thank you.

@LadyDuck The main guy does nice work and tried not to bother Pretty and I. We both talked with him when he was working in our bedrooms. He caulked around the outside of the windows, checked the air/heat vents and then put everything back where it was when he got done.
The second guy worked in the water heater closet and in the laundry room so we only saw him when they arrived.

@celticeagle Thank you. So far, so good. They put in measurements for the new storm windows today and should have those by Monday so they can install them.

So did they have to make the opening bigger? I would think 18 inches would be enough but I am small
. Right - better for them to take the doors - it's too much to get rid of them yourself - I see too many folks around here that leave their old doors at the curb and it's left there for days on end. You really did have a lot of house projects lined up!

@DaddyEvil I am SO glad you got this grant . . . we know too well how these house repairs can add up. We need the lottery and a half to get our stuff done
. It will of great peace of mind to know that things are in working order - all is well with your living space

@much2say Everything is done now except for replacing part of two windows in Pretty's bedroom and the storm windows around the house. The company that is custom-building the storm windows hasn't finished making them yet, so the guys will be back for those things. (The bottoms of both her bedroom windows look like termites ate them and they let in bugs into her room. That part of each window needs to be replaced.)

No, they don't have making a bigger opening under the house in the budget. I think their original estimate was around $8,000 and that was insulating the attic and outside walls, new storm windows all around the house, new front and back doors, working on the interior windows (They were painted shut.) to make them work and Section 8 says one window in each room had to be able to come out if we had a fire and needed to get out of the house from any room. We also got new smoke detectors and radon detector installed plus a new exhaust fan in the bathroom. They also installed new locks on every window. (That was last year's budget. Things had gone up in price enough by this year that we didn't get new front and back doors if they installed new storm windows all around the house.)

You're welcome.
The underside of the house just won't get insulation but that's okay... I learned that if I close off the opening under the house, the house stays a lot warmer during the winter and we don't have high gas bills.

Thanks. They made a good start on the list they're working from. They still have Friday and Monday to get the rest of it done.
So far everything they've done has been quiet... Pretty and I stayed in our bedrooms with the doors open in case the guys needed us for anything. We played online all day.

They did a good job of cleaning up after themselves yesterday... And were very quiet working around the house.
They asked me to empty out my closet because they need to get up into the attic and the only access for that is in my bedroom closet ceiling. We've got that done and I need to go get a shower now.

@DaddyEvil pleased you have such good workmen. Our new gardener and window cleaner also seem good, so we are happy about that. I don't like sloppy workmenship.

The lead guy said he'd go under the house to fix the broken duct work under there but they wouldn't put in insulation under there.
Yeah, I'm sure they know the rules.

I hope that you can get the work done. I´d say that the opening is enough unless the workers are very fat
. Thhis is one day when you´ll have to sleep at night.

Neither guy is fat but their contract says they can't work through a hole less than a certain size in case of an emergency... If the house catches fire, they might no get out of the smaller opening fast enough.
Yes, I'll have to sleep in the evening/overnight.

Any insulation in the walls and under the roof will help. And the panel I put in front of the crawlspace opening helped a lot this last winter.
Thanks.
Yes, I'm sure he's doing a good job for you.
