Wow, what is that noise in my house?? It’s SILENCE. Just like Simon and Garfunkel sang about, the sound of silence!!! Some storms formed over Louisville and didn’t move much. Six hours and nearly an inch of rain later, the temperature not only dipped below 90 but below 80!!! As a result, my poor overworked but in great working condition A/C unit finally got to take a break. It is rather weird after hearing it nonstop for four days. Now…if I could get these people to stop texting me, saying, “the people on the news said to check up on the elderly in this heat so I wanted to know if you’re okay.” The photo is one of the many gorgeous views I had at Red River Gorge earlier this month.

Who is texting you??? No one has checked on me. The power went out a couple of days ago; and the standby generator kicked in about 30 seconds later. Gotta love that thing. Great photo.

My brother and niece check on me, and everyone in the neighborhood looks out for everyone.

@FourWalls That's nice. The woman across the street calls me every so often. She lost her husband too...it was several years ago.

They may have to arrest me, because if I see a child or a pet in a car, there’s gonna be a broken window REALLY fast.

We have lived in this place for over 20 years and are so used to the quiet. We have new people moving in next door and we hope they will be quiet. Good of them to want to check on you but, as with most things people can go too far.

@FourWalls .......Glad of that. I don't see myself that way either. In my head I am still about 35. My body argues with me on that point quite often nowadays.

It was a joke, I don’t see myself being “elderly.”

The sound of silence is at time shattering. I experienced that at the wee hours of the morning I do not think anyone here will bother to pay attention to what the news would say Not that I have experience anything so far.

It sounds good after nonstop air conditioner humming for four days.

I'm glad "elderly" you are doing okay. We have a few clouds, even if the weather radar says we don't, but no rain yet. I'll try to go out in the morning and mow for a while if I can. We aren't supposed to see dew in the morning, either. We keep hearing heat lightning here.

Because this is a “big town” we have the “urban heat island effect.” That extra heat caused the storms to form over the city yesterday, and there was no wind to move them, so had to “rain themselves out.”

@FourWalls We are higher than the surrounding areas so often get rain/storms that don't show up on the weather radar.

After listening to “ch-ching!” from the electric company over how much the air conditioning has been running, I’ll take the silence.

We’ve just come out of a “heatwave” and are heading into another this weekend. No AC so we have to grin and bear it. Fortunately it’s not as bad where I am compared to London and the south ( max 25C/77F as opposed to 32C/90F), but still too hot for me. Glad to hear someone is checking up on you. When you’re on your own, you need that for sure.

Wow, 77 sounds comfortable. We’ve had 35C actual temperatures with a heat index around 40C (95F/105F). It’s usually my brother and I exchanging “check on the elderly” texts.

I like silence. I have it every day in my house now. Lots of noise when I raised six children.

We went to Gorge Rock while we were away but the view was a little different to yours! We had the heater going in the motor-home as the nights were around 2 degrees C so pretty blimmin' cold.

I was surprised my cousin in Alabama didn't start checking on me during last week's heatwave. She loves to watch the weather, but will see something for NYC and fear it's hitting Syracuse. I'm glad our A/Cs are now silent, too.

My mom was like that. If I was on vacation in Texas (and you know how big that state is) and she heard something happened, she’d call and make sure I was okay. I never will forget when Kilauea erupted in 1983 while I was stationed in Hawaii. I called my mom and assured her that I was NOT on the same island as the volcano and it was nowhere near me. We love ‘em for it, and you know it.

This is the same sound in our apartment, "the sound of silence". I love it, I cannot stand the noise, I am even considering to buy a "silent keyboard", this is the only noise right now.

It’s strange, in a very refreshing way, when it isn’t running after it’s been so hot that it didn’t get a break.

@FourWalls - It's hot here in the afternoon, but the mornings are not too bad, we can cool down the apartment in the morning.
