Plans for the Fourth of July?

Americans or non Americans, what are your plans for the Fourth of July? Some of you may remember me talking about how my dad’s family gets together at a “resort”. It hasn’t been nice in about 20 years, but the aunts (dad’s 6 sisters) like the tradition, so about 100 of us load up, and go to the lakeside Fin ‘N Feather. I’m not going. I quit trying because it’s just too hot. They spend so much time outside it makes no sense for me. My sister and her family go up for the day. It’s 3 hours away, and I can’t afford the gas to go up for the day. So, I think I’ll either watch baseball with Sadie, or see if my best friend is on call or not (she’s a nurse). Either way, the less heat the better. *American flag purse/bag. I’m patriotic. Giving it to a friend because I already have my own American flag purse.

That is a nice purse. I know that you have not been to that reunion for a number of years. I can understand why, the long ride and the heat. On July 4th, I always recall my first favorite person in the world, my Dad, as that is his anniversary. This year will be 16 years, and sometimes it feels like his life was just a dream, then other times it feels like he was alive yesterday. I will recall his life, his fun way, his passion for farming and for his family, and just 'him' in general. I remember his first anniversary, I was so anxious about it, but my husband asked me if he could take me away for a week's vacation. The only stipulation was that he wanted me to pack and be ready to leave in the morning and that I would know where we were going once we checked in. He wanted me to enjoy time together with him, and the places along the way. It was such great fun. Happy 4th of July and I hope that you can hang with your friend.

Oh, how I wish I could have known your dad. I can’t fathom how proud he must have been of you. Your husband just proves what a good man he is year after year, doesn’t he.

@AmbiePam Thank you. I hope that he would be proud of me. He talks to me in my dreams. He seems so much like he always was in them, and I love that. Ron is just a younger version of my Dad. He lost his Dad when he was a teenager, and my Dad was a step in Dad to him for a number of occasions when he needed advice. Dad's favorite saying was to be aware of your past, but keep your eyes, heart and mind focused on the present and the future. I have stopped thinking of his last couple of years, as he was so very ill, but I remember the fun times, when he felt well, and was working the land, visiting with friends, and taking us on family vacations. Those little moments filled a lifetime and they were good.

I love getting together with family, but when it's terribly hot outside, it's just difficult to be out in it for that long. I totally get that. And as for the gas thing...I have spent more money this past month going back and forth to the hospital for the son, it's ridiculous. I went nowhere else. I think I could have driven to Florida and back on the amount I spent on gas! Baseball or a movie with Sadie in the AC sounds wonderful to me! Time with the bestie sounds nice, too.

@AmbiePam I did. It was worth it, of course. I could not have been anyplace else. For several days there, I worried that it would be even longer than two weeks...other than the two times he has coded in the ER, he scared me this time.

We'll be staying inside, avoiding the heat from the sun and most of the noise and smell of the firework. I start having allergic reactions if I breathe in too much of the smoke from them. I have successfully avoided going to the ER on the 4th for several years now... I'm making that my tradition.

@AmbiePam People, even when they know someone has lots of allergies, either think it's funny or don't care.

My husband is a tow truck driver and is on call...so we are not planning on doing much. But perhaps we will take a motorcycle ride that is about a 15 minute radius from his work.

@AmbiePam It's shameful but I have seen this happen more and more and I wonder why. Very sad.

Love the purse. We always barbecued and swam until after my parents passed. The extended family no longer gathers. I no longer have a place to swim, but we will celebrate when my husband gets off work. My son and I are making burgers, hotdogs, potato salad and baked beans. I’m thinking that I will make a banana pudding too.

Happy Fourth of July. Whether you stay home or go to the resort, have fun. Fireworks will surely light up the sky. I was there before the pandemic, and there was an awesome fireworks display at the airbase.

I can't say I blame you for not going to the family get together. I hate being outside when it's so hot. I don't have nay plans per se but my daughter is going to a friends for the day and it's an outside bbq at her house. It's going to be stinkin hot and originally my daughter was going to pass since it's almost 2 hrs away but one of her other friends guilted her into it.

I hope she does have fun. That’s an awfully long drive, but being with friends has a way of making up for a long drive (I hope)!

I will be going to my great-aunt's house who lives across the street. They used to have a pool, but now they have a patio area, I'm not sure if my cousins will be there. Some of them go to White Lake, a man made lake in NC.

3 hours is a long trip to sit in the heat. I think I would pass too. I don't have any plans for the 4th.
