Good Morning myLot

Good morning myLot, its been a bit since we've last visited. I slept in this morning, and when I rose less than an hour ago, it was overcast, as it had just quit raining. I love it when it rains at night, it casts such a peaceful hush over the area, that allows for easy a slumber-I enjoyed such last night. We had been dealing with the extreme heat until Thursday night. A nice, dry cool front came through. Friday was just a gorgeous day, not a cloud in the sky, cool enough that children wanted to run as they played, and olders were able to sit outside without busting into a sweat. Yesterday and today promise to be more of the same. Our son and his wife are having us in for noon today. They've ordered a whole chicken and rib family meal from their favorite caterer in the city. It comes with all of the fixings, and they just love their cooking. Sweetcorn is on, and we went for a drive yesterday and picked up some. It hasn't been the greatest year for sweetcorn, and hence the price is outrageous, or at least the highest we have ever paid for it. A dollar a cob is the going rate. We will bring a dozen to our son's place for the celebratory meal today. Part of me is glad that the girls are so small that they can split a cob, but part of me thinks that by the time that they are buying it themselves as young adults they will be paying upwards of $2 per cob. I remember a neighbour calling us when we lived in the rural village, he had a patch of sweetcorn, and when it comes on you have to harvest it. It was a bumper crop and he literally gave us 6 dozen ears of corn. That would equate to a small fortune if you were a 'selling' grower today. We of course had no need for such a quantity of corn, and quickly got it done up in freezer bags and we enjoyed eating it all autumn, winter and spring long that year. ~Photo is mine

Welcome back Julia, I was a bit concerned not seeing you around. I am glad to know that you are well. I hope that Harper's foot is well by now. Enjoy your meal with your son and his lovely family.

Thank you Anna. We rearranged a bit in the television room, and I moved my laptop and am on it much less. Harper's toe is back to normal as of last Tuesday. One day last week Ron heated up something that I had made for supper the night before. When he put the plates out for the girls, Harper asked if Nanny made this, and then told him that she had been waiting a really long time to have this again. I laughed as I wondered what a really long time is in the eyes of a 3 year old.

@LadyDuck We chuckle over some of the things that she will come up with. I know that children are little sponges, and she proves it when she says things like that. I bought a lovely new sundress to wear for today, and I hope that sun comes out a little stronger before we leave.

@Juliaacv You made me laugh with "really a long time", but it's great to know that the girls love what you cook for them. I am glad that Harper is fine now.

Our son and his wife love ordering from there, they do small crowds as well as larger ones. The food was amazing and the company the greatest. Today is my birthday, and we were celebrating that.

Nice to see you, so glad it is cooling down for you. It is funny about the corn there. You can frequently get corn here for 25 cents an ear in the summer, especially for summer holidays or sometimes it is 50 cents per ear. It just depends how much is around I guess. The only problem is I get tired of eating it all the time.

Your prices are generally lower, you have a higher population so it makes sense. Ron is husking the corn now so that we can bring it with us to Jonathon's place in a bit. He told me that it isn't the best corn, even for the first picking. I hope that we find better corn as I had planned on freezing some over the course of the month.

@Juliaacv I hope I can freeze some as well. I made extra the other day with the intent of freezing it, but I never got around to cutting it off the cob. I strongly suspect corn will be on sale again for Labor Day, and I will hope to pick up several ears and get them ready to freeze..no excuses!

@snowy22315 Does your growing season for corn last until Labour Day? I don't know if ours will extend beyond mid August.

Well thank you. Yes, the girls each made me a birthday card, coloured with markers, and sat on my lap while the 3 of us blew out the candle on my slice of cake and then made wishes and blew it out. I had them practice blowing first-swallow, count 1, 2, 3, blow. Ellie, the dog's birthday is next, and a couple of weeks later each of their parents, so they will have this birthday thing down pat by then. They did not realize that you had to make a wish before blowing out the candle.

@Marilynda1225 Yes, we have started a treasure box here also. I have a nice little wicker basket with a hinged lid that I am using. I asked them not to tell me what they wished for, although I am not certain that they really know what a wish is. Yes, Ellie will be 11 or 12 years old in September. Enjoy this beautiful day that we have today, it is perfect here today.

@Juliaacv That's so sweet that you had handmade birthday cards. I have a treasure box which is filled with all sorts of things my grandkids have made me. Occasionlly I look through that box and it all brings back so many good memories. Since the 3 of you blew out your candle then you get 3 wishes for your birthday. Did the girls tell you what they wished for? Sounds like you have lots of birthdays coming up including Ellie. She must be getting old now? I'm so glad you had a good birthday

I grew some nice corn many years ago. It felt so good to walk out into the garden and pick a few cobs to go with our dinner.

That is the absolute best part of growing food in our gardens, isn't it? Seeing it ripen and then harvesting it for a meal right fresh from the garden. I remember when our son was a teenager, he picked some peppers and tomatoes and pulled some onions that were ripe. He brought them to me, and I wondered for a minute what I'd do with such a combination, so I sent him to the door of the refrigerator to look for the ingredient list on the jar of salsa to see what the top few ingredients were, and sure enough, I made fresh salsa that day.

@JudyEv Our son, Jonathon, sure did. I served it as an appetizer to some nachos that I put out as I prepared a (late) supper. He has a pot of tomatoes still to this day. I couldn't help but to notice so many little red cherry tomatoes on it yesterday, and he proudly told me that he goes out every day and brings in a handful to cut in half and put on a sandwich for his lunch. He has better luck growing cherry tomatoes than any other variety, and he likes them in salads as well as on sandwiches, so it is good.

@Juliaacv And I bet that was some of the best-tasting salsa you'd ever had.

@Nakitakona The past year I have not been as active on the site as I used to be. There are so many unhappy posts here, it is easy to stay away for how I feel. Some days it feels like a battleground, today has already proven such.

Corn on the cob is so good. I especially like it fresh from the garden. We had the best at my grandmas. She always had a big garden of veggies.

We have never had a large enough garden for corn, but always had generous neighbours and friends who did and shared it with us.

I do enjoy sweetcorn. My husband is busy husking it now and we will take it with us so that our son can cook it for our meal together. We will have a fun time together, it has been a week since I've seen the girls-that is record breaking.

I agree, it is nicer to get along than not. Those times and actions still exist in that area, in this area, I am not so sure as we live in the city and have no farmers in our region.

Thanks Linda. I saw an email with a message from you in it on the site, so that reminded me to get online and visit. Harper showed me her toe, it is easy to see where the cut was, and she wouldn't allow me to touch it with my finger, but apparently it is closed now and will heal. The bottom of a toe on a busy 3-year old gets little rest, and will naturally take a bit longer to heal. We all enjoyed the sweetcorn. I will have to pick some up next weekend and cut it off of the cob after I boil it and then freeze it for the cold months. I have to wait to see if I can find it on sale, it is costly this year.

I love sweetcorn. We have them in soup, grilled or for steamed. Didn't sleep well last night. A typhoon just hit our place directly.
