What's Going On?

When the drug dealers moved out next door, I was really happy! The new owner started remodeling the house. One of the things he did was make his garage beside my driveway into a new room of his house, expanding the walls out and enlarging the concrete pad his house sits on. Something else he did was put some type of cooling unit for the garage/room beside my driveway... When I pulled into my driveway last week, my car door banged into that cooling unit. I checked and I'm parked on my driveway... My car door shouldn't reach far enough to touch anything on the neighbor's property...
Since I rent this house, I'm not sure what to do. I guess I'm going to have to contact the landlady about the encroachment. I hate to make trouble with a new neighbor but I should still be able to open my car door when I get home from a trip.
I'm not happy about this.

@DaddyEvil Then get the city ordinance people on to this. Did he even have a permit to expand the garage?

Maybe so... I checked with city ordnances and there's supposed to be six feet between property lines at the sides of the houses. We had maybe 12 feet between the two houses before he expanded the concrete pad.

@BarBaraPrz I don't know. I never saw any posted permits to do any work there.

The landlady drives by here almost every day checking to make sure the house hasn't blown away. She should be able to see the encroachment but may not be looking that closely at property lines.

@DaddyEvil It's probably not something she thinks she needs to check - that someone would encroach on her property.

@DaddyEvil It was a pain even if you needed to change the heater in Switzerland. Here it's more relaxed, but you must obtain a license to built no matter what.

@LadyDuck I know we're supposed to have something from the city before we can do outside remodeling but we didn't need to get anything when the construction crew were here working in the house.

I was hoping the new neighbor would be quiet and friendly after he moved in... He's been friendly enough but I'm not sure he's actually going to live in the house once the construction is done.
It doesn't make sense to put a cooling unit between the two houses. He could have just as easily put it in the back yard like everyone else on the street did.

The left wall of my car garage was half open. When it rains the water sprays into the garage making the floor wet. I planned to have the open space covered with the wall. I told the neighbor my plan so as not to offend him.

Why would closing the wall of your garage offend your neighbor? I would have just had a wall built. As long as I stayed on my property, it's not the neighbor's business.

The landlady isn't available on weekends, even for an emergency. She won't answer her phone and lives way outside of the city somewhere.
When we first moved into this house, we accidentally locked ourselves out of the house. She told me it was my responsibility to make sure I didn't lock myself out. I broke a window to get back in and she had to call her insurance to fix the broken window.

I hope so. I don't drive the car very often but I'd like to be able to get in and out of it.

Good for the neighbors to be able to make this improvement, but they should have also talked with the landlady about getting a legal easement. Where I lived before that is what you had to do if you were putting anything within ten feet of the neighboring property. I wonder if the hope was that since it was a rental no one would notice or complain.

When neighbours misbehave one is dragged into a situation that one really does not want to be a party of
I hope the landlady will look into it and nip it in the bud. You must take some videos and photos to prove your point.
Good Luck

Yes, definitely report it to the landlady. Let the arguments about property lines be fought by the property owners. Not your circus.

Since they've stopped the construction over there, we haven't seen anyone to ask about it.
